Depression is a horrible monster that quietly stalks you in the shadows until it grips you tight and takes you prisoner.
It sucks the air from your lungs and strips you of everything that makes you who you are.
It brings unwanted tears that come from the deepest pits of your soul.
It steals your will to care for yourself and robs you of whatever motivation you had left.
It suffocates you and stacks weights on your chest.
It isolates you and feeds you lies as it tries to break you.
So, even through my tears as I lie bundled up on the couch with no sound or wanting company…I remind myself to tune out the monster and to accept the tears, to release them so they can’t hurt me anymore.
I remind myself to get up and eat or to just get water.
I remind myself to breathe and to never stop fighting for air.
I remind myself that I’m not alone and that I don’t have to listen to the monster’s whispers.
Always keep fighting even when it cuts you in unimaginable ways and leaves scars you’ll never forget. You’re stronger than your pain and more fierce than any force that threatens your wellbeing.
Even with tears running down my face and a feeling of defeat like a rock in my stomach, I know I’ll be here tomorrow, and the next day, and the next…because I refuse to let this monster be what brings me to my knees. I won’t surrender, I won’t give up. I’ll fight until the end and know that when it’s my time to go, long into the future, I can smile knowing I lost battles along the way, but I won the war.

“Thanks, Mom. I love you. Bye!”, you hung up the phone and jumped onto your bed.
“What was that about? You’re rarely ever happy.”, Archie leaned against your doorway.
“Shut up, Archie.”, you rolled your eyes.
“So, what’s up?”, he asked.
“My crush just asked me to my school dance!”, you squeled.
You didn’t notice your brother tense up.
“What?”, he said.
“You heard me! I’m so excited! Can you ask Veronica to do my makeup please?”, you smiled.
“First, who said you can go? Second, with a boy?”, he questioned.
“What are you talking about, Archie? Everyone’s going. And yes, with a boy. I’m a teenager, not a little kid anymore.”, you said. He was putting down your mood.
“No.”
“What do you mean, no?”, you asked, annoyed.
“You can’t go. Tell your crush or whatever that you’re not going.”, he said.
“Archie! You can’t do that! What’s your problem?!”, you yelled.
“You heard me, (Y/N)!”
“It’s not your choice! You’re not Dad!”, you yelled at him.
“Oh yeah? Fine, let’s go ask him. Right now.”, Archie pulled your arm and went downstairs to your dad.
“Dad, (Y/N) has a question.”, Archie said.
He was getting you steamed up.
“Can I go to the school dance? Please?!”, you asked.
“Of course you can! Go have fun. But, you have to be home by 11. I don’t care if it’s a weekend.”, he said.
“Wha-?”, Archie exclaimed.
“You heard Dad, Archie.”, you glared at your brother.
“Fine, but not with a boy, right?”, Archie crossed his arms.
“Well, she can’t go alone. And, she’s growing up now. My baby girl is 14 now.”, he said.
“Thanks, Dad!”, you kissed him on the cheek and ran to your room.
“Dad! You’re leetting (Y/N) go? To the dance? With a boy?!”, he yelled.
“Archie, she’s not a little girl anymore. She’s going to high school in a few months. She’s growing up. And, I think you need to accept that.”, Fred said.
“First, I do accept that - “, Fred cut him off.
“Are you sure about that? Because, you still treat (Y/N) like she’s a little kid. I get that you’re her big brother, but let her be. She’s growing up and you need to accept that.”, Fred said.
“Crap. You’re right, Dad. I gotta go talk to (Y/N).”, Archie ran to your room.
“(Y/N).”, he knocked at your door.
“Go away.”, you said.
“I’m sorry for being an asshole. I just don’t wanna lose you. Cuz you’re my baby sister. And I just wanna protect you.”, Archie said.
You opened your door and gave your brother a tight hug.
“I’m always gonna be your little sister, no matter what. But, you have to let me grow up.”, you said.
