Strawberry Lemonade Cookie Bars

When you need a serotonin boost, try funny videos or something sweet with a cakey, buttery base and real fruit.
My gym plays Fox News on some of the many TVs that hang over the cardio area. I watch for as long as I can until my heart rate exceeds a healthy level. One recent morning, I looked up from toiling on the treadmill (please clap) to see the chyron on Fox News reading: “Kamala Harris tells odd story about elephant.”

Re: FOX
It is an entertainment channel, according to it's broadcast license, so can we all agree to simply call it FOX? And at my gym enough of us complained that it is all LIES so the channel does not show up anymore. Phew.

Do you think the recipe would also work for lime raspberry bars? That assumes I can find freeze dried raspberries.

Even these cookies know the president is supposed to uphold the Constitution
Apparently the pope, I mean, president of the United States doesn’t know if it’s his job to uphold the Constitution, so I thought I would repost for you a delicious springtime concoction I created for The Contrarian. My apologies to you if you already subscribe over there, but today’s version also has a printable recipe, a wee bonus for you guys.

Hi, Marissa,
This recipe sounds great, but I’m not a big fan of strawberries. I have some freeze dried raspberry powder that I was thinking of using instead. Do you think I should cut back a little on the raspberry powder as the flavor is a tad more assertive?
Love your column on Substack and the Contrarian. Thanks for keeping my spirits from tanking in this political environment!

I'll give the recipe a try - sounds good. As far as the current administration in DC - anything to get attention no matter how offensive. BTW - did you see the latest? He doesn't know if he has a responsibility to uphold the Constitution. And, he doesn't seem to know what the Declaration of Independence is about.

I agree completely about White Lotus! In fact I think this season is very well done and very well acted. As in previous seasons it offers a window into the complexity of human nature.

Recipes for long weekends

Made Simple. Vol 32
Whether you are on holiday or not, if you live in Australia, you have probably had a few extra days off recently and are already looking forward to this weekends Anzac Day long weekend. I’ve written a few recipes that I think are worthy of languid days when you perhaps have a little more time to give to a nice lunch or early dinner.

Gluten Free Rhubarb Recipes

A little sweet, a little tart. Rhubarb never disappoints
Outdoor farmers market season is slowly making its return to Chicago, and you know what that means—rhubarb season is officially here. While you can find rhubarb at some grocery stores, there's something special about picking it up fresh from a local vendor. There's just a little more flavor, a lot more freshness, and a better story behind it.

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with this small-batch recipe
Today is Independent Bookstore Day! I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance of our local bookstore. And, as they allow dogs inside, Norman and I regularly make the store our walking destination, which is kind of dreamy.

Since I live alone I love small-batch cooking. I just added malted milk powder to my shopping list. I remember when I was growing up malted milk was popular for good reason. To add a good thing that happened this week, I attended a town hall in MO because Republican House Rep. Ann Wagner hasn't held a town hall in 12 years. She holds one of the seats (gerrymandered) the Democrats are targeting. There were local activists, state Senators, and Senator Chris Murphy. I was born in St Louis, moved out after college and lived in Texas, Tennessee and CT, and moved back after I retired. I missed Senator Murphy. He is such a dynamic and knowledgable speaker. The turnout on a rainy, late Friday afternoon was tremendous, and the message was clear - keep resisting.

"Ha Shem is not a cookie"

Donald Trump was in the front row at the funeral of a Pope who had nothing for him but contempt. This morning, vulgarity attended tradition. And tradition had to wait for the motorcade.
On Saturday, sitting remarkably close to Pope Francis’s coffin in St. Peter’s square, I thought about hard and soft power, Christian charity, and delivery.

Consider a Beloved-Recipes Potluck

Such a fabulous way to connect with friends through food-sparked stories
I was so touched when my tai chi teacher reached out last summer, wanting to host a gathering at her house based on the cherished-recipe focus she’d seen me post about on social media. I count that among the many delightful examples I have of how broad the interest in this topic is proving to be; I never know where the next dose of interest is going to …

I have a group of friends with which we have about a monthly potluck, and often I choose a theme (favorite finger foods, for example), but this food-related memory idea is one we haven't done yet. I'm going to borrow it!
This also seems a good time to mention that your writing on this Substack has inspired me to put together a family cookbook- all our "secrets" and favorites in one place. Any advice on how to get reluctant family members to participate? The responses I'm hoping will be positive, but also along the lines of "I don't have time" or "I'm not very tech savvy."

Oh, Cynthia, where to begin? This is brilliant!
I don't know if you've come across the growing community of Family Historians gathering on Substack, but I think I can safely say that many of us would be thrilled by this idea as a project with a family twist.
I brought my community to Substack nearly 18 months ago, and we've focused on inspiring each other with platform-independent ways to capture our family memories as stories in a range of forms.
Here's what you have me thinking of... what if you were to take this idea to a group of family members (at a holiday, reunion, or other gathering of cousins) then, explicitly ask family members to bring that dish with that family recipe. During the festivities, you bring individuals into a little instant recording booth (a closet with a ring light and a phone will do) and have someone interview them. Capture those recordings with the collected recipes, and «POOF,» you've got a multimedia memory book of family traditions.
I think this would be especially fun during holidays important to a family's ethnic roots, such as Eid al-Fitr, Lunar New Year, or Diwali, for example.
Let me know if this is something that might interest you, or if you know someone who might be interested in pursuing the idea. I'm excited and would love to celebrate it in one of my published Project Recipes, and host their description of it as a project in an online event.
You can see some of the "Project Recipes" our members have done at projectkin.org/recipes. Interestingly, only a few of them are related to food. 🍽️

Send Me Your Pie Recipes

We're taking pie and bread and sexy ass dresses back from the trads....
I don’t know how it happened, but somehow the tradwives and ultra-conservatives managed to co-opt pie. PIE. Sourdough, crumbles, tarts, all of it. They took our buttery, flaky symbols of comfort and tried to make them a mascot for oppression and Stepford-style submission.
