one of the more casually fucked up parts of reading vns is when you first cave on doing it and realise that they're actually books. like you intuitively get that, but the first time you pass a 40 hour playtime mark and realise you're still seeing new text, you get why people are so passionate about it as a literature medium

it also comes with the incredible utility of freeing you from having to use the word "multimedia project" or anything along those lines because, inherently, you are well within the normal idea space by integrating things like original music, branching storylines, visuals for characters, minigames, cutscenes, simulation elements, whatever. you just get an amazing degree of slack on how much text you're allowed to have on top of that

Anyway the actual worst part of being a monster is that affection does not come in a slow molasses trickle like it apparently is supposed to with people; it comes like the kind of torrential rain where it seems like the sky just opens up, dry but for an omen that keeps you on edge and then it's all there all at once.

And you're still. Well. A monster. So when a monster adores someone, it is actually scarier and more disturbing than viewing them with malice or the grey indifference held for anything not important enough to elicit adoration or ire. It is sudden and total and vicious. It scans as predatory, and in some ways it is; it scans as dangerously possessive, because it is. You learn young that it hurts those subjected to it; you learn that your skin is made of razors.

Do you understand? The instinctive understanding that you're dangerous colours everything. It makes you hesitant, it keeps you distant. Drives you to shut down, cold, to panic at the thought of talking about your feelings. Desperation wells up and makes it only fiercer when the dam breaks.

It makes you easy to take advantage of, too. Everyone knows that any cruelty towards a monster is justified- it's a monster, after all. You gazed upon that innocent girl with covetous eyes, did you not? And you, stupid beast, trusted when she said it was alright.
