Good thing come to those who wait 🍀
So what - a beautiful Irish girl will do a river dance for me and will be mine for ever? Well, I am waiting for the miracle… :)
What can it hurt?
where is that renaissance painting with those two fellers and a giant fucking random skull on the floor that looks like it was accidentally stretched out in photoshop
THANK YOU
somebody please explain
Someone once told me it’s like that because it was designed to be hung in a stairwell so the skull pops out as you walk past.
…I guess it works but you have to be at a pretty sharp angle
There was a whole trend at one point where artists would include something in their paintings (usually a skull, for whatever reason) that’s super distorted in just the right way so that it looks normal if you hold the painting up to a convex/concave mirror. I have absolutely no idea why. But I think that’s what’s going on here.
In case anyone’s curious, here’s what it looks like when you walk past it irl:
It does have a 3D effect to it! It’s pretty neat, guess it would be even more impressive to people from the 14th century.
Super dumbed-down history lesson: Rich folks commissioned paintings partly to give themselves something big and cool to show off to friends and at parties. So, “it does this weird thing if you look at it from the side!” was understandably a popular trend back when it was either this or someone playing a musical instrument to keep everyone entertained. Plus, it gave artists a chance to flex.
Also, there are obvious implications of such dual perspective to the interpretation of this piece, chiefly that one cannot glance at life and death at the same time, which was, definitely, like the primary tension in the worldview of the time. And that's also possibly why primarily skulls were featured in this way

On 14th June 1941, 10 000 Estonians, 16 500 Latvians and 18 500 Lithuanians were deported to Siberia in animal wagons by Soviet authorities. More than half of them never returned to their homeland.

Another illustration I created for my Masters project, Bypass Wildlife. I think this only took me 2 days to draw and put together. This animation was projected onto the wall and had an accompanying sound piece, the owl was projected onto the floor with another sound piece and the three drawings were framed and hung normally on the wall. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any images of it all up together as the university building was broken into and they stole the projectors from my space.
