adam was more open and honest with voight than kim. why was he lying to kim and hiding things from her? why did he lie and say he was going to cop bar? why didnt he tell her he was scared to become like his father? he expects her to communicate with him but then doesnt do the same with her. he is a hypocrite. if he doesnt want to become like his father then why is he a gambler like his father? why does he leave his home, his family in the middle of the night to go gambling? clearly he has a gambling problem like his father. he needs to give up gambling if he doesnt want to become like his father. he needs go to gamblers anonymous program and get help.
Tell me you don't get mental health, self-worth and image, and relationships without telling me
There's a lot of things wrong with this, but the main thing - Adam isn't being a hypocrite. He's struggling. And he is communicating with her.
It's not like Kim had no idea he was struggling. And in the episode we literally saw him opening up about he's scared he's going to lose them.
Yeah, he shouldn't have lied but the guy is scared and worried. And Adam's always been a bit impulsive and irrational, especially when it comes to him losing his job. And Kim gets this.
Plus sometimes it's easier to open up to someone else than the person who is your world and who's opinion of you matters the most. And Adam is already worried that one day Kim is going to look at him differently since he won't be the person he wants to be if he loses the job.
There's also the fact that he was, in that moment, basically begging Voight to let him help so of course he opened up. And the fact that Voight is the closest thing Adam has to a (alive) father figure.
He also isn't a gambler. The gambling isn't the issue there - it's the impulsity around his job. He doesn't need addiction help because he's not a gambling addict, the gambling was just the outlet to get the cop adrenaline he needed. (Which obviously I can see why he's scared he'll end up like his dad, because chasing that high would lead to an addiction but it isn't for him now).
Also just stop pulling at straws, Burzek has shown amazing growth and we just saw how they tackle problems - fucking maturely.

Promise me we'll keep fighting for this because I need us, Adam. I need this family. Well, you know I will. Yeah? Yeah. I'll keep fighting for it for the rest of my life. That's nice. I was gonna do a whole thing here, but— this seems better. Let's get married. Let's make it forever.

mind you, burzek are the characters who canonically got therapy, individually and as a couple, like at least they actually wanted to work their shit out i guess
"Third Time's a Charm, huh?"
Marina Squerciati and Patrick John Flueger as Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek in Season 11, Episode 3: "Safe Harbor"
Do you have a favorite moment from this weeks PD? I feel like an underrated one was how quickly Adam thought he knew what Kim was going to say when he started talking about being unstable etc and then his reaction when she said counteracted him. And his little smile when Kim starting talking about the designs for Makaylas bedroom 🥰
I have three. And I can’t decide between them please don’t make me.
1) “Get behind me. Get behind my vest”
This is the Burzek equivalent of the Upstead in the van getting shot up moment. It’s not that Adam doesn’t trust Kim and doesn’t trust she can do her job, it’s that he can help her be safer while she’s doing it. He can protect her from being hurt again, and it was so perfect.
2) Adam telling the babysitter they won’t need her at the weekend.
THEYRE SHARING CUSTODY. Like they’re putting Makayla first and making sure she’s happy and loved and sharing time with her. She’s got a bike at the house (and that helmet is adorable)! She designed a label for their bird feed container. Adam’s her dad, and he and Kim are doing the single parent roles. And it’s clear they’re doing them well and I love it.
3) Kim’s apology.
We have been waiting for this since 8x10. She said she was sorry then but it was defensive. It was faced with the fact she’d wounded a constant in her life so badly she felt she had to.
But this? This was Kim making a promise. She believes in Adam. She’s always believed in him. And she’s sorry for making him doubt her. She’s sorry for making him leave. She’s sorry for letting her fears and trauma come between them.
It was perfect and wonderful and no I’m not ok.
