I’m obsessed with the Bath & Body Works subreddit because there’s only three types of posts and it’s:

1.) Women in their fifties having the epiphany that capitalism and/or marketing is evil, but like. They don’t realize that that’s how capitalism and marketing as a whole are designed to work; they think that this is a unique type of evil that Bath & Body Works has invented. They’ll be like, “It’s sick and twisted that they just keep releasing new products that are inferior quality versions of their old products with a different label and then making them seasonal items so that people feel pressured to buy them before they can really think about it because they’re worried they’ll miss out!!! This should be illegal!!!” You’re telling me, girl. You’re gonna be soooooo mad when you find out about. The whole world.

2.) Level 1-2 Hoarders in denial showing off their collections of hundreds of candles and body sprays and lotions and then frothing at the mouth in the comments section when people offer support resources for hoarding and shopping addictions.

3.) The world’s most iconic autistic women with a vintage Bath & Body Works special interest who don’t realize they’re autistic women with a vintage Bath & Body Works special interest trying to convince themselves that the lotion they thrifted from Goodwill that expired in 2002 isn’t rancid, it’s “macerated”.

Actually, making this rebloggable only to add that there’s a fourth type of post which is people posting pictures of horrifying fires that their candles caused and being like, “This is the sixth time my candle has almost cost me my home. What should I do? I am NOT going to get rid of it. It’s a discontinued scent,” and everybody being like, “Oh my god??? I LOVE that one, do NOT throw it away. Just get a candle warmer.”

The standoff with agents happened on Jan. 8, one day after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in south Minneapolis. Wooten’s refusal to comply with ICE was captured on video and posted to Facebook.

The agents tried everything to intimidate the guard.

“You can’t come back here, bro,” Wooten can be heard in the video saying to an agent wearing a mask and sunglasses. “I’m talking to your manager,” the agent said. Wooten responded: “No, you’re talking to security, I’m in charge.”

ICE left empty-handed. Wooten said he just stood his ground, “10 toes down.”

“I was doing my job like I’m supposed to,’’ Wooten said. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I just want to make my family safe because I’ve been here three years.”

Unironically I think the early to mid 20s age group in America has unbelievably bad consent boundaries on all levels and so much language to defend it but this makes me sound like elon musk if I say it however the commonality of someone who will be like “I had 47 panic attacks and it’s your fault” if you tell them no is insane

I rejected someone and got called “the scariest person I’ve ever met” with so much therapy speak interspersed like alright okay alright okay alright okay

“You just say whatever you’re thinking and I don’t know how to handle it” was verbatim part of this conversation. Also everyone hates to see an autistic bitch

When I was in this age bracket, there was a huge emphasis on improving consent culture via graceful rejection, and it’s gone by the wayside. Which sucks.

Twice in my youth (once in high school and once in college) I was in situations where I was asking someone out and I could tell they were calculating in their heads the risks of rejecting me, and both times I said, out loud, “you can say no, I wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t prepared for either answer.” And then they said no. This wasn’t some spark of special wisdom I had - I knew to do it because feminist conversations among my age group brought it up regularly. This isn’t happening nearly enough anymore.

More recently, I was really glad when we got to “rejection sensitive dysphoria” in my IOP program and it was one of those symptoms where the therapists really emphasized how it affects others. Because it does.

Being someone who cannot handle rejection makes you much more likely to violate boundaries, and yes, that includes sexual ones. Yes, you, reader who has never hurt a fly. If you don’t want to stumble backwards into sexually assaulting someone, fix your RSD meltdowns. If you keep them up it’s only a matter of time. Because if you’re nice enough to interact with, but are known to have RSD meltdowns, guess what happens when your friends and acquaintances need to reject you?

I just KNOW Ilya is the kind of person who uses English being his second language to be a fierce ally to any marginalised group. He’ll be in locker rooms like “What do you mean? No, no, explain it to me. I don’t understand the joke. Tell me what’s so funny about that.” with a continuously rising level of aggression

Still thinking about how when I was watching the new Frankenstein with my friends and there was that scene where Harlander was smoking a cigarette and I was like “Hmm, in the Western world prior to the 1920’s, smoking cigarettes was not a gentleman’s habit. It was seen as very low-class, largely the habit of rough types and sex workers. I wonder if Harlander spends a lot of time in brothels,” and then like two seconds later, Harlander was admitting to getting syphilis from his habit of visiting brothels, and I lost my shit.

Usually I have pretty low expectations of filmmakers when it comes to these kinds of details, but Guillermo del Toro clearly cares about the details so much. I mean, I always knew he was a very intentional filmmaker but this was just an absolute treat for the history nerds.

Further research later told me that part of what spread cigarette smoking in the Western world was the Crimean War, because the Western soldiers were trying to emulate the smoking style of their Ottoman allies. Harlander is a war profiteer selling arms in the Crimean War! The timing and context are just perfect!

I just…I really love being genuinely rewarded for picking up on things telegraphed by small details that only a history nerd would notice. I love seeing a filmmaker care that much. Most wouldn’t bother with something like that when what it’s signaling isn’t common knowledge and thus unhelpful to the majority of the audience. But GDT isn’t interested in mass appeal; he’s interested in making art for the people who share his sensibilities, and for that I am so grateful.
