I think it would be really funny if Shen Yuan was a successful author in his first life. Like a high brow, award winning, people dissect his work in lit classes, successful writer. People think he’s reclusive and brooding in a J.D. Salinger way (he’s not, he’s just an antisocial nerd) and his books are super emotional and reflect on the human condition (an accident, SY genuinely does not realize when things are tragic, nor when they’re super homoerotic). He becomes Shang Qinghua’s literary hero, and yeah he wants to be able to write like him one day, but bad smut is what pays the bills regardless of what Peerless Cucumber has to say. So once they’ve both transmigrated, they’re arguing about his writing and SQH is like “Well if it’s so easy to write a book, why don’t you do it?!” and SY is like “I have, it’s not that hard.” (think Elle Woods talking about getting into Harvard energy) and SQH is all sarcastic “Let me guess, you were Shen Yuan in your past life? Pfft” and SY is just like “yeah, actually”. And SQH just blue screens because he cannot accept that this emotionally constipated doofus who’s read every chapter of his shitty smut book is the same guy who wrote a book that made him cry so hard he couldn’t breathe. He just turns around and walks away and then walks off the edge of Bai Zhan Peak like this.

i love how bsd is a war story that doesn't tell you so until so much later. the war is bsd in overhanging and present in countless pieces of the plot, but it creeps up on you. you hear it in little pieces, a mention here, a mention there, and eventually it's practically omnipresent and the focal point of the arc.

Recently I have came to the conclusion that the Aftermath of the Great War, how the Stray Ones deal with living in a post-war world, is the true plot of BSD.

Most fans think the silly detective story in the beginning is the original plot which unfortunately was forgotten by the author, which is fair; but I argue that’s not the case.

The Great War, while appeared quite late, actually connects to almost every single events and characters in BSD from the beginning.

If my memory serves me right, it is first mentioned in the manga in chapter 39: Portrait of a Father (2016). Atsushi figured out that the orphanage director, being an orphan in an abusive orphanage himself, and later on a victim of the war, developing an extremely awful mindset: children need to be exposed to the terror of the world in order to prepare themselves and survive. It’s this mindset that made he abused and tortured the poor boy, and look, it brings us to the problem since the start of the series (2012): Atsushi’s trauma.

It’s discussed more in chapter 65: Dreaming of Butterfly (2018) aka Yosano’s backstory. However, if we circle back to chapter 8: Kill A Man and Die Thee Too, Part 2 (2013), Yosano’s introduction, her speech to Kaiji makes so much sense now after reading her backstory. So the war had been planned since the early stage of the manga.

After that, the Great War became a prominent topic after the introduction of Fukuchi. His motive, action, mindset that lead to the Decay of Angle saga are all the results of anticipating in the war. Even last year, chapter 115: Flecks of Dark Foam, it’s revealed that Teruko’s backstory is also set in the war.

And now we got to the light novels.

(SPOILER ALERT)

Mimic in Dazai Osamu and Dark Era (2014) is already so infamous. Being used as the scapegoat, they went to Japan, destroying Oda’s dream and the indirect cause that push Dazai out of the mafia.

They reappeared again in 55 Minutes (2016). Speaking of which, 55 Minutes provides us with a lot of information about the Great War outside Japan and relating to ability. In the same novel, it’s revealed that ability users participated in the war and the clash between the Transcendent caused the most casualities in the whole human history.

And in the war, ability weapons were developed, one of them is the Shell. Experiments on ability users to create singularity were done.

Stormbringer (2021) also provides us info about those experiments: one of them is the artificial living singularity project aka Paul Verlain’s Demonic Beast Guivre and Nakahara Chuuya’s Destructive God Arahabaki (Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen does mention that Arahabaki is from a lab).

And what happened within Japan? Untold Origin of the Armed Detective Agency (2015) tells us: after the war, there were so much orphans that the government had to allow child employment, Ranpo is among those orphans. That’s why Naomi, Kyouka and Kenji can work in the agency in spite of being minors (Before them, there was Ranpo, and possibly Yosano)! Beside this, tons of illegal, underground and foreign organizations flooded to Yokohama, making it even more chaotic before the war.

Mori said he agreed to become the Port Mafia boss to keep the underworld in control. It’s not explicitly stated, but I can guess the chaos of the underground’s activity is the main reason.

These are the only ones on top of my head.

Link Click is hilarious because all the main characters all think they're in drastically different genres of story.

Cheng Xiaoshi thinks he's in a buddy cop movie. There's a bit of comedy, a bit of suspense, some romance, but everything turns out all right at the end of the day.

Lu Guang is standing somewhere between Shakespearean Tradgedy and a psychological horror. Nothing is ever okay, and he cannot escape but he also can't ask for help because how would he even start.

Qiao Ling thinks her life is like a mystery novel. People are clearly hiding things from her and people she loves keep getting hurt but by god is she going to get to the bottom of this no matter what.

Xia Fei (as far as we've seen so far) is trapped in a coming of age story. He's just lost his mentor and is going to have to go off and figure the world out on his own. But he's making friends and learning the error of his ways.

Vein thinks this is a romance. Do not deny it. He's trying to live out his dark romance fantasy, and it's so bad for everyone involved.

Liu Xiao is a mystery to me. He's been playing Tetris on set. Honestly, he probably thinks he's the narrator, smug bastard.

im in disbelief at the fact that a lot of folks are simply over palestine. like protests are dwindling down. people are not very interested in news related to gaza. some are simply over it.

israel hasn't let aid in gaza in 70 days. gaza has been starving for 70 days. the condition of people there is horrendous.

i find it distressing to think about children in gaza. how does one continue to have a childhood in a genocide? they don't have school. they don't have safety. they don't have food.

despite all this, the kids will be alright. they'll be alright once the genocide stops and they get back to 'normal'. till then, can we please try to support them however we can?
