billy and jonathan are foils. they are both abused older brothers. the difference is billy took his abuse and abused others whereas jonathan took his abuse and vowed to not let others feel it .

it’s an extremely common narrative storytelling method where you take two characters and put them through similar circumstances while emphasizing the differences between them.
jonathan was abused. jonathan is not abusive. billy was also abused. but billy is abusive.
you can feel however you want about either of them. if you love billy, you have that choice. if you love jonathan, you also have that choice.
but acting like billy is a saint while simultaneously acting like jonathan is a devil spawn is completely misreading the point of their characters in the story.

And we're supposed to believe, in that final mileven goodbye scene, that Mike was the one that "understood" her best? When even SHE had no idea who she was outside of him until Max encouraged her to find out what SHE liked and what SHE valued in season 3. And after all that he couldn't even say he loved her when Will wasn't coaching him through it. Yeah that's real fucking romantic alright!
