As a young boy in school, Masaki Sashima would be dragged out of his classroom and beaten by his fellow students.

Masaki, now 72, was different to the other kids.

He was Ainu, an Indigenous people from the country’s northern regions, most notably the large island of Hokkaido.

“During recess, the hallway door would open, and several guys would yell at me to come out,” he said.

“I clung to my desk in the classroom and kept quiet.

"Everyone would surround me and beat me.”

Japan has long portrayed itself as culturally and ethnically homogenous, something that some have even argued is a key to its success as a nation.

More than 98 per cent of Japanese people are descendants of the Yamato people.

But the Ainu are distinct, with their own history, languages, and culture.

But, as the victims of colonialism, assimilation, and discrimination, much of that identity has been lost.

An Ainu woman named Chiri Yukie wrote down some of her people’s oral traditions into Japanese because, as a child, her people were being displaced by Japanese settlers in Hokkaido. Her language was disappearing, so she (ironically) saw translating the stories into Japanese as a way to preserve them. She died at age 19.

Some of the objects from the Ainu exhibition at Japan House in London this year, showcasing traditional Ainu skills and culture. There is a campaign to get Ainu recognised as an official language, at least in Hokkaido, and small steps are happening, for example, bilingual bus stops. It reminds me of the struggle for Welsh to be revived after suppression for centuries.

Also, this is a good short ~25 minute documentary that shows Ainu people fighting to recover their ancestral bones and bodies from Hokkaido University that’s worth a watch.

hey it’s ok if you lost your ai virginity back when you were uneducated. a lot of posts go like “reblog if you have never ever used generative ai and never ever will!!!” but it’s ok if you have used gen ai before and it’s even ok if you used to think it was cool, back before you understood what it really was and how it worked, either because no one had taught you about it and you discovered it on your own or because the only education you had received about it was from the tech bros. you’re not a burger with a bite out of it for having used ai. ok

It is 100 percent okay to stop using it today and join the “boo AI” club.

This isn’t a purity thing. This is a “everyone stand with us against destroying the environment and giving asthma to poor people” thing.

Did you know that when one community says no to an AI data center, they specifically search out communities with fewer resources? Communities that can’t defend themselves? And the pollution 100 percent affects their health and wellbeing, in addition to burning through our already scarce drinking water.

You can stop using character.ai today. You can say “I listened to the facts and stopped.” And another thing: don’t you think it’s a bit more impactful to have used it, stopped, and then you’re in a position to say how little it helped? How doing things for yourself improved your life?

also posts in the spirit of “if you’ve used AI even ONCE your soul is tainted!!!!” can’t be great to those with OCD

So true. People Gold Star Lesbianning ai makes me so tired.

i am starting to get seriously annoyed at the generalization of yaoi and yuri to mean gay fiction stuff and lesbian fiction stuff in general. you people don’t even care about manga. you people don’t even know what the most prominent bl and yuri works are outside of a half-formed stereotype of those genres in your mind. stop it!!!!!!

“man im sick of getting yelled at across the house like a kid when someone wants something from me” -> “hey why the fuck is it normal to talk to kids like that anyway. why would you disrespect anyone by yelling for them several rooms away and expecting them to jump up on command to see what you want when it’s not an emergency. that’s so fucking rude.”

you can’t come over to me to speak at a speaking volume and ask if i’m busy? you can’t send me a message or give me a heads up ahead of time if you want help later? you gotta scream my ‘name’ across the house and impatiently wait for me to jump up? you’re calling me like a servant and getting mad if i’m not fast enough when i don’t know what you want or how time sensitive it is or whether i was busy or whether i could hear you? im supposed to be listening for your back and call all fucking day just in case???
