Febuwhump 28: You’re Safe Now
Caretaker frowned as they heard that the shower water was still running. Whumpee may’ve been known for taking long showers, but this was extreme, even by their standards. They put the cup of water on the tray, walking into the bathroom, the door clicking shut behind them.
They set the tray down on the sink, pushing a hair from their face. “Whumpee, are you okay--?”
The icy water drenched Whumpee’s hair, hiding their face. Their arms held their knees close to their chest, their back all scarred and bruised. They rocked back and forth, struggling to stifle their sobs. The sight broke Caretaker’s heart.
Caretaker knelt down beside them, one hand gently resting on their shoulder, the other turning up the temperature of the water slowly. Whumpee flinched slightly before settling again. “Whumpee, it’s freezing in here. I don’t want you catching a cold, so I’m turning up the temperature, alright?”
Whumpee’s crying lightened as they murmured something that resembled an ‘alright.’
Caretaker rolled up their pant legs, using a scrunchie to tie back their hair as they stepped into the tub. “Do you wanna talk about it?”
Whumpee curled in tighter on themself. They raised their head, eyes red from crying. “If you had been a day later, I would’ve broke,” they rasped, their voice barely audible over the water. “And Villain would’ve found some way to take it out on you. And I would’ve never been able to forgive myself.”
Caretaker’s hand cupped their cheek, their thumb wiping away a tear. “But you didn’t. You didn’t break, Whumpee. And I think you’re not giving yourself enough credit. You’ve always been the strongest of us.”
Whumpee didn’t meet their eyes. “Whumper was going to have Lackey take us into my worst memory. And, if they had...”
Caretaker’s stomach turned as Whumpee pressed their face into their knees, trembling. “Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay, Whumpee.” They wrapped their arms around them, running their hands through their wet hair. “It’s okay.”
Whumpee sobbed into their shoulder. “No, it’s not,” they rasped. “Oh Gods, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, Caretaker. I was so scared...”
Caretaker held them close to them, blinking tears from their eyes. “It’s okay, Whumpee. You’re safe now.”
Whumpee’s sobbing quieted as Caretaker repeated those last three words over and over again, both of them so relieved that they were together again.
