This thing has been a labor of love from its first nascent imaginings as a fic submission for Old Man Yaoi Zine vol. 2 (and you can read that original fic here!) to the final product. It comes complete in three acts with illustrations, an academic foreword, and some of the nichest opera jokes I've ever put to the page (keep an eye on those running headers in act 2...).

Many things discussed in these are still things argued about today - because people refused to listen to trans men then and they are refusing to now.

i genuinely encourage non black people to engage with this, who might be worried they can't because of the word "nigga" because they feel like it's overstepping. the only way it would be overstepping is saying it to me when ur not black, but please don't be afraid to engage with black art.

i kinda get annoyed when non black people police other non blacks on how to engage with black culture because it creates a problem where non black people avoid us all together which can be extremely isolating and create even MORE tension and overall being uneducated.

If your gut reaction to this is "no it's not" I swear, I promise, that disappointing people, particularly disappointing people who have unrealistic, outdated, manipulative, or just plain wrong expectations of you, or versions of you in their head, is better than continually disappointing yourself. Signed, an inveterate people pleaser who FINALLY realized this and made my life almost immediately more authentic and fulfilling by acting upon it.

After the hell of the past two days, this reminded me of what America could and should be about. It’s a little pocket of hope when our administration is trying to extinguish diversity and community and basic human decency and replace them with fear and hate and division.
