Locking Ao3 Fics - 5/16/25

Since AI scraping of Ao3 is becoming more prevalent I will be locking all my Ao3 fics on 5/16/25 to Ao3 Users only. I know this won’t prevent all scraping, but should stop most attempts. If Ao3 finds a way to stop scraping I will unlock them all again.

To allow guests to view my fics, I will keep them public during publishing and lock fics 2 weeks after completed posting date. With a note in the fic to remind guests to download or (hopefully) make an Ao3 account if they wish to reread. If these scrapes become so frequent that the short window that they’re public becomes a problem, I will start posting only locked fics which guests will not be able to read.

I will be updating my Ao3 profile so everyone knows the change in posting.

This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author’s personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn’t gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning–she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.
