Bit of a think piece but Turning as a story is something I'd view as a story of hope. It's written in the way that it shows that ultimately, trusting your fellow man and helping each other leads to a better world. Yet it shows that in a world that is and always will remain flawed as long as humans are flawed. Humans have always been multifaceted and are never black and white, it's why there's such a strong contrast between the characters we know in TL1 compared to TL2.

Kishiar is a good example for what happens to someone who's dunked into unfortunate or different circumstances as we see from Yuder's flashbacks, but there's also Ever, who was stiff and rigid to the point that even if she wanted to believe in Yuder's suspicions, she ultimately didn't give him the benefit of the doubt. There was Gakane, whose feelings of inadequacy and desire to prove his worth ended up wasting his life away by sacrificing himself. You don't see them being like that anymore in TL2, and it's not just cuz of Yuder's actions to change the future – it's a new set of circumstances that changed their decisions and views, giving them the chance to grow beyond who they were from TL1 but it also didn't change who they are fundamentally.

This makes the course of the story so much worth it seeing that good change came about because Yuder decided to trust people, to open up and not hide away or push others away. Being alone is hard, but having a friend or two by your side can make all the difference. When Yuder realized the difference in his relationships with the people he knew before and in the present, he acknowledged that this is a far better outcome than everyone always being on edge.

So yeah, hopeful. You can't trust everyone you meet, but you will find people who you'd consider friends or someone who's close to you someday. It made me glad that Yuder understood that and took that to heart.
