i keep noticing that conversations around jkr’s transphobia almost always center trans women, and it’s like we collectively forgot that she aimed her first major public attack at trans men and other afab trans people. the essay she circulated was fixated on the idea that trans men transition to “avoid womanhood,” especially autistic trans men, framing us as confused, impressionable, or socially pressured.

and the thing that really gets to me is how quickly people gloss over that part. that erasure is exactly what makes trans men feel like the canaries in the coal mine here: we were the first group she tested that rhetoric on, and the fact that it barely registers in the larger conversation just proves how easy it is to overlook us.

yes, she’s violently transphobic toward trans women, and that absolutely deserves attention. but it’s strange watching everyone act like it started there. it isn’t a competition, but the sequence matters because it shows a pattern.

this is also part of why i usually avoid fandom spaces. there’s a tendency to flatten everything into one neat discourse point and miss the underlying context. i was double-checking a character’s pronouns and ended up in a thread claiming that the d20 campaign i was watching (that was HEAVILY based on harry potter) doesn’t have any trans women “despite jkr’s transphobia mostly targeting trans women,” and it just made something click for me again. trans men are the canaries. the fact that people still forget that is kind of the whole point.

The discussion also ignores how, before she became openly transphobic, she wrote a book in which she mocked intersex people with “a great, hairy hermaphrodite.”

Weird how no one wants to talk about intersexophobia is so closely tied to transphobia, nor how the lies about “children being forced into transgender surgeries” is a way to make people angry about transgender folks, all while attempting to make Intersex Genital Mutilation into law.

Wanna stamp out transphobia? Start listening to intersex people. We don’t have the same lived experience, but hell, society has been erasing us medically, legally, and socially for a LOT longer.

Signed, an intersex and transgender man who is sick of having to correct intersexophobia in trans spaces, and of seeing fetishization of our bodies.

“Goodbye Peter” is singularly the most unhinged, chilling Remus dialogue of all time. But there is not enough discussion on the quote preceding it?

    For contrast:

PETER: You don’t understand - he would have killed me Sirius!

SIRIUS: Then you should have died! Died rather than betray your friends as we would have done for you!

REMUS: You should have realised - if Voldemort didn’t kill you, we would. Goodbye Peter.

What Sirius is asking from Peter is an equivalent exchange of loyalty that is expected in the Marauder dynamic - he is asking for a sacrifice that they would have also done for him.

Remus, in contrast, is saying - the punishment for your disloyalty to us, to James, is death. Goodbye Peter.

Some new ones since I’ve been gone for a few years and had a mind shift on some topics:

    • Marlene is very very bi and hates that she’s in love with a man (but oh boy she is so in love with Sirius Black)
    • Marlene regularly shuts Sirius up by telling him that she doesn’t need a man to tell a woman what to do (even when it’s things like what he wants to get for dinner, it’s always her winning arguement)
    • Honestly Sirius doesn’t mind, and low key enjoys being bossed around but won’t admit it (wink wink)
    • He does hate when James says something grouping them together in this matter and will say James lets himself get bossed around because he’s obsessed with Lily and she’s smarter than him. He gets bossed around because Marlene is bossy and she doesn’t mind if she steps on him. (James stops bringing this up because he is so tired of hearing about their sex lives.)
    • Lily does not understand why everyone is so obsessed with comparing her to doe’s just because of her patronous
    • Lily will not refer to herself as James’s girlfriend and hates when other people do. She loves him, but she is not the smartest girl in the room just to be someone’s boyfriend because he’s the Quidditch player
    • They would all be Swifties if Taylor Swift existed back then
    • Marlene’s favourite perfume is Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

    The Wicked King

“Perhaps the smith will make you a cup that never runs out of wine.”

Cardan gives me a look up through his lashes that I find hard to interpret and then rises, too. He takes my hand. “Nothing is sweeter,” he says, kissing the back of it, “but that which is scarce.”

One of many pieces of information rarely discussed that has stuck with me in studying the Holocaust in a literacy class is that people who survived the death camps often did not survive starvation. It is very difficult for a severely malnourished body to recover from starvation. A severely malnourished body will struggle to process food at all, and many people die in the process of “refeeding.” This is called refeeding syndrome for this reason. Reintroducing food can and often is fatal without careful, medical guidance.

Starvation is one of the most common and effective forms of genocide. What makes it effective is that past a certain point, even if aid has been delivered, it is not enough to save someone from death by starvation. What also makes it effective is that withholding food is viewed as a passive consequence of political turmoil rather than an intentional act of violence among a people. You will see more people die from starvation in genocides across history because it is an effective way to kill many people without the use of state resources.

The starvation of Gaza is intentional. The United States and Israel may gesture that they are delivering or allowing aid into Gaza, but in reality they are active participants in the starvation of Gaza by destroying medical infrastructure, limiting the amount of aid “allowed” in, and blocking aid trucks from entering. Throwing food into Gaza by airdrop at this point in the genocide will not be enough without medical infrastructure to refeed a severely malnourished population. Many will die anyways. Many have already.

We have GOT to resist the normalization of child labor. The decline of education is not a reason for children to join the workforce. “Labor shortages” are not a reason for children to join the workforce. Parents’ weakened earning power is not a reason for children to join the workforce.

If children need to work to be able to eat, your society is not doing well.

we should hype up bottom surgery more i think. both twitter transphobes and chronically online trans people really like to be disgusted at phalloplasty, vaginoplasty, ext. and i really think we should treat them as cool and sexy and neutral like top surgery scars or whatever

As of tomorrow I will be 49 weeks post bottom surgery. And lemme tell you…it’s pretty great.

There was a level of constant dysphoria from having a dick that I didn’t even know I had until it was gone.

Vaginoplasty is pretty amazing. I’m very, VERY happy about having gotten it.

Some things to keep in mind:

    • The first year can be rough at times, because it takes approximately 48-52 weeks to fully heal, but the further you get into that year, the easier it gets.
    • Healing time also depends on if you get the surgery with or without cavity. Be realistic going in and make sure to read all the literature your clinic sends you.

I say this because a lot of the negative shit around bottom surgery hinges on people NOT knowing about the healing time and using the shock value of not-yet-healed surgical wounds. Bottom surgery is FUCKING AMAZING, but yeah, it can be gross and painful at first.

I had my surgery done at GRS Montreal. The staff there are AMAZING. They were kind, patient, and helpful.

    Here’s some bottom surgery facts:

    1. Yeah, it’ll be gross at first. The first 90 days is when all the surface-level healing happens. As with any major surgery, healing is gross. It gets a lot less gross once the surgical wounds heal, the swelling goes down, and the packed gauze in your clitoris comes out (it’s there to maintain the shape while healing).
    2. There is scarring, but it fades. Rub silicon gel into it 3-4 times a day for several months once the wounds close. After a year the scarring is minimal, and it will keep fading. I don’t even notice it anymore.
    3. Everything WORKS. Stuff feels good. Orgasms are AMAZING.
    4. It has absolutely made me feel more confident as a woman. It is INCREDIBLY gender affirming.

Dilation is a pain in the ass for the first 4-5 months. Not because it hurts, but because you have to do it so often. After that it becomes more like “here is an hour a day that I set aside for me time”. At the end of the first year you will only have to do it once or twice a week, at which point it definitely becomes more like just setting aside a bit of time to get in touch with your womanhood, just to relax.

Dilation doesn’t hurt (though it can be uncomfortable in the first month or so while the swelling comes down). Your new vagina is a part of your body and your body takes care of it. It is honestly pretty neat!

Bottom surgery is legitimately AMAZING. It has been practiced for almost 100 years. It is established medical practice. Do not let transphobes dissuade you from it!
