Something about the way that on that roadside, Aaron falling to pieces, Robert having everything to lose, he still told him a watered down version of what happened to Katie to Aaron. No manipulation at that point just desperation because he was losing Aaron. He was losing him right before his eyes. He saw before anyone that Aaron was punishing himself, that he was going to end up in the ground and Robert’s in love with him. So he blurts out what happened to Katie. Maybe a part of him to relieve that burden and guilt he had been carrying, but also to help Aaron relieve that burden and that guilt that he was carrying, and in that moment, Aaron could have gone to the police. He could’ve told everyone what happened, but Robert didn’t care. He saw Aaron on the edge of that quarry weeks before and he means it. He couldn’t handle it if he lost Aaron, so he did the only thing he could think of and in that moment, going to prison scared Robert, his family hating him scared Robert but losing Aaron scared him more.
