Thieves prosper. The rich remember.

sparedragon asked:

I’m looking for the original passage, where Chains talks about thieves prosper, the rich remember, and how the secret peace breaches this. Can you tell me where it is in the book, because I couldn’t find it... Thanks

hello! it’s actually in red seas under red skies:

“But the second mandate,” said Chains, lowering his voice and glancing around into the fog to make doubly sure that they were not overheard, “is this—the rich remember.”

“Remember what?”

“That they’re not invincible. That locks can be picked and treasures can be stolen. Nara, Mistress of Ubiquitous Maladies, may Her hand be stayed, sends disease among men so that men will never forget that they are not gods. We’re sort of like that, for the rich and powerful. We’re the stone in their shoe, the thorn in their side, a little bit of reciprocity this side of divine judgment. That’s our second mandate, and it’s as important as the first.”

This year’s Valentine’s Day cards celebrate Scott Lynch’s short stories. I wanted to do them all but ended up with way too many “A Year And A Day In Old Theradane” (also because i ended up rereading it instead of just doing them). The fourth one is from “The Smoke of Gold is Glory”. Might do some more later. Happy Valentine’s Day to all the Right People.

Anonymous asked: Hey Scott, when does "The Bastards and the Knives" come out? Amazon has it listed as today (Mar 1 2017) but I'm guessing that's not the case as it's still only "preorder?"

scottlynch78:

This book does not yet exist. It’s a piece of database flotsam we can’t get rid of. There is no such book coming out any time soon. Book retailer databases are weird, yo.

Crikey! End of the Month!

scottlynch78:

It’s a gorgeous albeit unseasonally warm night here in Massachusetts, with soupy mists drifting across the quiet streets and the gentle sound of droplets pattering from leafless branches to the ground below. Several cats are watching me type– it’s possible they are more interested in their as-yet-unmaterialized dinner than in my editorializing.

I have precisely seven items of variable interest I’m doing a little gotta-go-potty dance to share, but I am still waiting on confirmation for one, and I want to do them all at once. So hang tight. Watch this space and my other spaces; I’m gonna talk as soon as I freakin’ can. Seriously. It’s all good news, at least if you like the stuff I do.
