I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.
I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.
Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.
Are there any other particularly egregious examples?
This book can be downloaded for free on Researchgate, posted there by the author himself:
The Biology of Human Survival: Life and Death in Extreme Environments
most people only want to talk about die my love in terms of motherhood and post-partum depression and i think that is just. such an oversimplification of its messaging. like it is much more about the erasure of women’s personhood from birth to death under the patriarchy. the central relationship is not between her and her baby, it’s between her and her husband as she bucks against his increasingly desperate attempts to tie her down. she has a whole monologue about how at the age of three she felt trapped by the filial relationship to her parents, of having to belong to someone. the character she’s most frequently paralleled with is her mother-in-law, who is experiencing a total loss of identity after the death of her own husband. motherhood is an aspect of that erasure, absolutely, but it’s much larger than that, which is why she’s so frustrated when other women try to bond with her over the difficulties of raising a newborn. she does not mind the business of raising a child, but she does resent the invisibility forced onto her by the identities of daughter/wife/mother. this is also why nature/wilderness/wild animals are such a major motif; not because the natural world is inherently feminine, but because to join civilization as a woman, you must be kept.

“Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else. The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to. Private schools and private limos and private doctors and private security are all pressure release valves that eliminate the friction that would cause powerful people to call for all of these bad things to get better. The degree to which we allow the rich to insulate themselves from the unpleasant reality that others are forced to experience is directly related to how long that reality is allowed to stay unpleasant. When they are left with no other option, rich people will force improvement in public systems. Their public spirit will be infinitely less urgent when they are contemplating these things from afar than when they are sitting in a hot ER waiting room for six hours themselves.”
