@tiredbutfunctional

im just here to look at cool stuff my guy

thinking about the time some terf dipshit on twitter said "you weirdos will be saying TREES are a social construct next" and I got nerdsniped and waded in like "trees ARE a social construct. there is no fundamental binary characteristic that separates trees from other plants" and well, I'll spare you the details but the conversation ended with the dipshit yelling "PALM TREES HAVE WOOD" which is hilarious because "wood" actually does have a pretty unambiguous, binary definition and palms in fact do not qualify

Everyone wanted to be thicc but nobody wanted to be fat. Everyone wanted the dad bod but nobody wanted to be fat. Everyone wants fat mommy milkers but nobody wants mommy to be fat. Everyone wants to be a bear but not like, an actual fat bear. You get what i’m saying

Everyone wants the mistique of fatness or use the language of fatness to denote hotness without actually being fat or acknowledging that fat people or fatness can just be hot.

Welp. Google's AI horseshit has arrived. And I'm not complying. They can pry my ID out of my cold dead hands. I will simply go elsewhere. Remember folks, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR IDs. Do not comply. Resist, fight it, use other browsers or sources beyond youtube and google controlled services. Call them. Email them. Make noise. Fight back.

I've been using Google as my main mail service since 2006, and every single account or service I've ever signed up for was made with that address. For a long time I thought it'd be impossible to divorce myself from Google.

It took less than 5 minutes to switch to a ProtonMail account, less than 2 hours to download and/or offload every byte of data from my Google account, and less than 3 days to change every single account or service I've ever signed up for to the new address.

As of today, the only single one I have that's still tied to it is YouTube. It's the only thing I'd lose access to if I deleted my Google acount entirely.

They really, really want you to believe that it's a hassle to switch to a different email system. But it's not. Most websites and/or services allow you to change the email address associated with it.

I've been using Google for almost 2 decades and it only took a few days to move everything. It's not a painful sacrifice; it's an easy change that, frankly, has absolutely been worth it.

Proton Shoutout

You can and should switch to a free, encrypted Proton email account. You also get all of the below perks. For free. There is no trick. It is paid for by the people with paying plans. I am one of them. The (completely functional) free tier is there to entice you into getting a paid account with even more perks. (It worked on me.) But there's no penalty or pressure for staying with the free account.

Also get your stuff off the google drive and put it on Proton's drive. It is encrypted. Only you with your password can access it. Not even Proton can see what you put in there.

Switch everything away from Google. It's easy and it's important. Read above, click the link for Proton, download your gmail and switch.

i started listening to radio garden thanks to you! sorry if this is a dumb question but is there any way to see what the song playing is called? because all i see is the station name :,)

Avatar

oh yay!! A couple stations will list the song name on radiogarden, but most of the time I go to the station’s website, and they’ll often list their recently played songs. At the very least they’ll probably have a contact you can call or email to ask the dj directly. One of my favorite stations lately is Humboldt Hot Air

i was curious about what this was and have found so much joy in the past hour just scrolling around the globe and stopping to listen for 10 or so minutes per station. I found a local college station that was being run by a sweet sounding older gentleman who reminded listeners to enjoy the good things in life, listen to music and maybe take a break from watching the news if its too much. "It's the holiday season, go have a pastry if you can. That always makes me feel good." before he signed off for the night he said, "do not fret, I will be back next weekend :)" and left with a really cool song. That seems like such a small thing, but in that moment, i was connected to this stranger, playing some songs he liked. I don't know him, he doesn't know me, but i might just go get a pastry because of him :) and i wont fret, because he'll be back next week, and now so will i.

This is so sweet!! 🥹 I hope you get your pastry!

For those missing context, the site I’m talking about is radio.garden! It lets you listen to radio stations from anywhere in the world! There’s also an app version if that’s what you prefer

It’s also a good alternative if you want to listen to music on something other than youtube, spotify, or itunes!

i forget baby bugs don't really exist not in the way i want them too anywYs. i was like how come ive never seen a baby beetle i bet theyre soo cute and then i googled and i was like oh right. grub

grasshopper nymph.

hey, don’t cry— grasshopper nymph, okay?

Bugs with complete metamorphosis (beetles, butterflies, antlions, wasps) typically have 'grubs', while bugs with incomplete metamorphosis have 'baby bugs'. Examples include (but aren't limited to) mantises, crickets, roaches, stink bugs, stick bugs, and treehoppers

Most non-insect arthropods also have a baby stage, such as centipedes, spiders, lobsters, and isopods

A Baby mantis at my friends house!

Maybe I'm going to start insisting that, in line with the seven classical planets, seven colours of the rainbow, seven virtues, seven muses, seven lucky gods, seven sisters, seven necessities, seven rishis, seven mother goddesses, seven days of the week etc that the only possible number for genders is seven, so anyone insisting on two is ignoring the natural order of things.

7 isn't just prime (actually a double Mersenne prime!) it's also safe, happy and lucky, it's the only prime to precede a cube... It's downright perverse to pretend that there's "two", nature abhors a binary...

thanksgiving is a holiday based on a falsified narrative full of white guilt and the erasure of history so what are some good native organizations to donate to this coming thursday

please also consider looking into funding native/tribal food sovereignty projects if you have food to donate or money to spare. friends, please add more if you know of them and have links to provide:

you can also buy food/gifts from indigenous sellers or donate to gofundme fundraisers made by indigenous people who need help getting groceries, paying medical bills, or paying rent. do something to help us and our communities.

try water projects too, like the navajo water project: https://www.navajowaterproject.org/

a lot of reservations are fucked over on water by illegal oil drilling, pipelines, or other breaches, like in the navajo rez’s case: contaminated by illegal uranium mining.

I would like to put my endorsement to the Sovereign Bodies Institute, home of the database of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The database is trans-inclusive, the data protocols follow the desires of the families of MMIW, and this holiday season, they are collecting donations to buy gifts for the families, especially the children, of missing and murdered women.

I’d like to add Feeding Nunavut, the cost of living in the isolated north for Inuit is up to and sometimes over 5x the prices the rest of Canada is used to.

say what you like about infinity war but the scene where drax and thor make sweet, muscly love is one of the most genuinely moving moments in modern cinema. o sure, maybe 45 minutes is “too long” and “unnecessarily graphic” but i appreciate the realism and attention to detail. thor has the stamina of a god and they really made us experience that. playing abba hit “dancing queen” on repeat throughout the entire scene was an absolute masterstroke and really took the emotion of the piece to the next level, especially how it zoomed into thor’s ass every time they sang “young and sweet”. what a brave move by the russo brothers and i cant wait to see what they come up with next

history fucked me up

oxford was built and operational as a college before the rise of the mayans and cleopatra lived in a time nearer to pizza hut’s invention than to the pyramids being built

I need a noncomprehensive history book that covers Known World History in time periods, like “in this century, all this shit was happening concurrently” and not just all spread out so I have to piece it together like some unpaid uneducated scholar

You mean like this?

I grew up with this book, which is frickin’ enormous, and it was endlessly fascinating to young me to pour over the side by side comparison of events taking place concurrently under different headings and in different parts of the world.

Or if you want something you can put on your wall, there’s this:

I had this book! My grandpa gave it to me and it was really freakin useful!!

okay but here’s an even cooler (free!) visualization that goes a step further and tracks ideas, devices, infrastructures, and systems of power

✨️with a special focus on colonialism, militarization, automation, and enclosure✨️

You can spend hours upon hours exploring this

not to vague anyone but switching from spotify to youtube music is not raging against the machine <3

I saw the "youtube music is raging against the machine" post again so instead of ripping someone's throat out with my teeth here is Arthur's Official Media Privacy For Dummies Post <3

My credentials are that I have 700 songs I didn't pay for on a refurbished ipod from 2007 and it's AWESOME. (PS backmarket.com for refurbished tech they have lots of old ipods if you're into that. But also phones and laptops and shit for cheap.)

First off. Reddit.com/r/piracy forever and ever. Go through their masterpost they have literally anything you could ever want. You will never pay for media of any sort again. The people of reddit are smarter than me.

If you currently use Spotify and wish to stop, here is where I would start:

1. Bandcamp!! If you want to financially support your favorite artists it's Bandcamp.

Plug your playlists into merch table they will do the hard work for you here <3

Put your playlists in they will spit a download link out it's so easy. All the metadata is there and everything.

They can only do 100 songs at a time so it's not ideal for a bigger library but it works fine for what it is.

Awesome for full albums or individual songs if you're just looking for a few things and not transferring a whole library.

https://spotalike.com/en

A handy youtube clone that's good for streaming or downloading music and videos.

And finally, this isn't piracy advice but you don't need daily curated playlists and you definitely don't need yearly listening stats. Listen to the bands your friends listen to. Keep a list of songs people recommend to you. Try to find a local radio show or a college radio channel. Go to local shows. Be curious about genres and new bands. Put effort into curating and owning your music library, it's worth it.
