@barbwritesstuff

Hello. My name's Barb. I write stuff. For Details: barbaratruelove.com

My name's Barb. I write stuff.

Specifically:

Of Monsters and Mainframes

Of Monsters and Mainframes is a novel about a spaceship who decides to kill Dracula. It's 80,000ish words and came out in June 2025 with Bindery Books.

She's A Doll

She's A Doll is a horror/comedy about a ghost who, in the moment of her death, glued her ectoplasm to a porcelain doll (functionality ain't the best, but aesthetics are on point), and she's not letting go until she's found the man who killed her and returned the favour.

Coming out Fall (the Northern Hemisphere one) 2026 with Bindery Books.

The City of Monsters Duology

The City of Monsters Duology is the story of a city, and the supernatural power struggles within it. Both games are full of paranormal thrills, romance, and choices, both big and small, that will change the course of the city.

These interactive novels are written with choicescript and released via Hosted Games.

Blood Moon is a 445,000 word interactive novel. Play as a werewolf as you defend your pack against vampires and (if the mood is right) fall in love. Published with Hosted Games.

Thicker Than is a in development sequel to Blood Moon. Play as a fledgling vampire turned undead lord surviving in the aftermath of a werewolf attack. Schemes, politics, and danger are around every corner. Release date TBD.

Ren'py Shorts

Back in 2023 I wrote and released a handful of short games made with Ren'py. They're free and (in my humble opinion) very fun. Featuring fairies, mermaids, and super powered farm kids.

You can find and download all three games on my itch.io.

I also have a website and a KoFi page which is the best place to support me, if you like what I do.

Thanks for stopping by.

I can't be bothered to put in the links just now but according to Wiktionary,

  • In every living Germanic language except English, the word for 'turtle' incorporates 'shield'
  • Many of them are literally 'shield toad'
  • English borrowed from French instead
  • The French word is related to the Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc words
  • One might expect these to derive from Classical Latin. One would be wrong.
  • The Classical Latin word does survive in the scientific name and in a second Italian word for turtle.
  • That word (testudo) is built on 'testa' which can mean 'fragment of earthenware' or 'shell or covering'
  • So the Germanic languages are calling it shield-thing and Latin is calling it a shell-thing! Very nice.
  • But, you ask, if not from Classical Latin, where do the Romance Language (and also English) words come from?
  • Medieval Latin 'tortuca'
  • And where did that come from?
  • Wiktionary says the origin is disputed but one of the options given — which Merriam-Webster on my phone seems fine with — is that is was derived from a Late Latin word derived from Tartarus
  • "because it used to be thought that tortoises and turtles came from the underworld and they were commonly paired with such infernal beasts"
  • Excuse me
  • Turtles
  • Did some early pope have a run-in with a snapping turtle and never got over it no, snapping turtles are Western Hemisphere
  • TURTLES

BEHOLD A HELLBEAST

@beautifulterriblequeen this made me laugh so hard that i got over my anxiety about peer reviewing tags

Ok but tortoises are bad tempered little assholes and I love them. Clive once spent an hour trying to kill my brother from any direction he could ram him while he was lying on the grass. Settled on his throat as the best bet. The fact he is the size of a side plate does not deter his murderous ambition.

So its mentioned a few times that in the Blood Moon/Thicker Than universe, vampire creation has a low success rate.

Which begs the question of how was Blackwell able to amass a large group of vampires without anyone noticing?

Since just statistically speaking, for each vampire in his army there would be multiple failures, which adds up pretty quickly in missing persons cases and bodies to dispose of.

Lawrence Blackwell killed a lot of people, and yes, it was noticed.

Even before the werewolves came to town, his area of the city was awash with missing person posters (there is a reason why the werewolves could get rental property there cheap: no one wanted to live in such a dangerous, crime ridden part of the city). He also kidnapped and enthralled fledglings that weren't resurrected by him. So, not all smilers were Blackwells.

He processed the bodies of humans that didn't turn at his supermarket (why meat there was so cheap), so bodies were rarely discovered, and because his thralls could operate in some capacity during daylight, he hid pretty well...

But he was making waves, big ones, and if the werewolves hadn't destroyed him, it's likely the Night Court would've eventually done it, just to punish him for being so damn unsubtle.

There's no Masquerade in this world but there is common sense, and you don't shit where you eat. Dead humans bring investigations, which courts discovery... and even the oldest vampires can be destroyed by a determined enough human.

Lawrence Blackwell wasn't a small moves, playing it safe, kinda guy. He did big, risky things (like kidnap werewolf cubs) and eventually it blew up in his face. Unfortunately, he did a lot of damage before he went, including to our MC.

How are my bat-boys Marcel and Iliya doing? Are they okay?

They're in the corner, speaking to each other quietly in French... I think they're scheming.

*leading the dark souls knight I adopted off the street by the hand into a gas station* so this is sort of like our bonfire. They have a lot of different kinds of estus here

Are you thinking of writing an interactive book with werewolves as the main plot again? I think it would be interesting to have a human as the MC who's joining a pack, something like Minjo in her younger days.

And to be honest, I love the way you write about werewolves and I'd like to see more of this.

Honestly, right now, I'm just trying to get back to writing again. I've taken a couple of months, letting my brain soupify, and now it's 2026 and I need to remember how to make words go.

Love a character who is neither trustworthy nor untrustworthy but another secret third thing.

Guy who can be relied upon to make the right choice 98% of the time but God that 2% is a fucking doozy.

I have reposted this before but I am always impressed by how well-thought out every spot is. There is no good place to sit. “Oh, Eomer’s cool, I’ll sit with him” but then you will have to listen to Gollum and Bilbo the entire flight. “I’ll sit with Sam!” Pippin and Merry will be turning around the entire flight to talk to him. Sure, you can sit with Elrond, but you’re going to deal with him staring down Aragorn and Arwen. You may love Legolas and Gimli, but will you love sitting BETWEEN them? Just when you see a spot that seems okay, somewhere behind or across the aisle is a terrible option. This is so good. No good seats on the LOTR plane

no i think 17 looks good

17

Dress like them. Blend in. There's already one imposter among them (the witch king is next to 13 in the centre row, so isn't sitting with the other eight) and the others either haven't noticed their new member or are just vibing. Will they notice and/or vibe with a second imposter? How high can nazgul count anyway? Blending in is the way.

Now is the time for me to go feral over @barbwritesstuff ‘s Blood Moon

I made a Marco collage! Phone screen size (well perfect fit for my phone at least)

Anyway, literally me anytime I have free time to think and my thoughts are filled with just Blood Moon

I will be making more collages. Dunno which is next tho

I'm OBSESSED. The level of detail is actually kinda scary. The lore references are as deep and dark as the sea... but, like the sea, also has that sparkling bioluminessence. 💙

Loser schmuck vampires are my favourite.

"Who you calling loser? I was a Romanian prince you know!"

"Ce mai faci?"

"See my what?"

"You were a Romanian prince but you don't speak Romanian?"

"That was Romanian? Your pronunciation is horrible."

"Dude."

"Fine. I died in 2019. I don't say that because no one respects a vampire who died in 2019, even though they should. I survived COVID with a blank undead resume. You know how many vampires starved in those lockdowns? So many. No pubs, no clubs, no people stumbling home through the park at night. The fights of the hospital's biohazard bins were wild, let me tell you. Everyone punching each other over a surgical sponge to suck on."

"Horrifying."

"Blood with general anaesthesia isn't the best. Makes you loopy. I passed out a couple of times."

"What happens when a vampire can't find blood?"

"You cease being undead and go back to being regular dead, for good this time. And, on account of the no souls thing, there's no second chance as a ghost or nothing neither. Anyway, I should get going. Need to catch the early morning bus back to the graveyard."

"You sleep in the graveyard?"

"Yep. My current crypt is pretty crowded, two skeletons, two other vampires, a ghost that complains that we're squatting the whole time, even though I'm, like, ninety percent sure neither of the skeletons are theirs anyway. The graveyard staff charge those of us with fangs twenty bucks not to tell the hunters we're there."

"I always figured you vampires live in mansions and stuff, servants at your beck and call, ready to bleed. Guess that's just a stereotype, huh."

"Oh, there are fuck off rich vampires, for sure, but they're not going to lift a finger to help a fledgling. There ain't no undead solidarity, that's for sure. By the way, you owe me twenty bucks."

"No I don't."

"I think you do."

"Are you... trying to brainwash me?"

"One of these nights I'll get that power. Hasn't kicked in yet, but it will. Anyway, catch you later. But wait, before I go, are you done using that bandaid?"

"Jesus Christ dude."

god it’s so sad living in an allocentric world. There are so many relationships that are so complex and nuanced that are all put under the label of ‘romantic’ and immediately all the intrigue is taken from it. Like don’t you realize that these relations are actually ENHANCED by the fact that they are not romantic or sexual?

NOOO DONT PUT THE CHARACTERS IN A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP YOURE TAKING OFF THE SEASONING!!!!
