Yousef, Khadiga, and Majd are a young family from Gaza whose campaign I have been trying to boost for a while now. Even with the so-called ceasefire, they still face danger from the occupation and difficulties in daily living due to the blockade of goods and high prices of whatever is available.

Majd has been in-and-out of the hospital for most of this genocidal war due to his respiratory condition and repeated infections. He needs continuous treatment costs $350 per week. The family are renting an apartment at $1200 per month. And Khadiga has already been away from her university studies for 2 years, with the cost of registration for the semester is $500.

Every night I sleep in Ireland while my family sleeps under bombardment face starvation, fear and the cold of winter in tents.

People sleep to rest. I sleep to see nightmares.

Every night feels like a horror movie I must live, not watch. I wake up tired, shaken, and broken by the images my mind creates.

I had an amazing stable life with my family in Gaza before the war turned our world upside down.

I was a young, ambitious lecturer at the Islamic University of Gaza, teaching English and linguistics. I loved to motivate and empower my students so they can reach their full potential.

When the war broke out, I was displacement with my family multiple times in places I did not know existed in the Gaza Strip. Sometimes we literally ran for our lives under heavy bombardment and learned what a near-death experience actually meant.

Five months into the war, my Irish university managed to get me out of Gaza. Ever since I evacuated and left my entire family in Gaza (parents, siblings, nephews, nieces), I woke up every day so tired from horrible horrible horrible nightmares, wishing to end my life.

But then I remember: If I give up, who will help my family survive? Who will help me get them out when the crossing opens again?

I saw the constant bombardment every day live in the news, and my family was dispersed in different places in the Gaza Strip, running for their lives, struggling to survive.

The misery and suffering continue until today after we lost our house and the cold of winter if freezing them all, especially my elderly parents and young nephews and nieces.

HOWEVER...

Hard times do not only create strong people; they also reveal the goodness and humanity in others. And Gaza needs the world’s goodness now more than ever.

My family lost their home. They now live in tents, shivering in the cold. Rainwater enters every time it rains. They have no electricity, no clean water, no cooking gas, and no safety. Survival itself has become a battle.

I have been dedicating all my efforts to helping my family survive in the current situation in Gaza and apply for reunification visas with the support of my college and friends here in Ireland.

Every single member of my family counts the seconds until the day we all reunify in Ireland and live a safe, normal life like we have been dreaming for more than two years

We are living through the heaviest days of my life. I watch my children’s every breath with a heart shattered by fear. A ruthless virus is ravaging their small bodies, and we are left with nothing but patience and prayers amidst these merciless conditions.

My eldest son is suffering from severe inflammation and acute anemia. His frail body can no longer fight back. Meanwhile, my little daughter’s lungs can no longer endure the smoke from the fires we are forced to light for warmth; it has triggered chronic respiratory distress, making her a frequent patient in the hospital.

We live in a tent that offers no protection from the biting cold or our mounting pain. With a winter storm approaching, my fear grows that the freezing temperatures will claim what is left of their strength. I feel utterly helpless watching my children wither away, and all I seek is to provide them with the medicine and warmth they need before the illness and cold take them from me.

I'm writing these words with a heavy heart and a sense of shame…

It's not easy for a doctor and pharmacist who has dedicated their life to serving people to reach out and ask for help, but circumstances are harsher than any pride.

My pharmacy was completely destroyed by the war,

We are a family exhausted by displacement and life in a tent. We are tired of constant displacement, and the tent is no longer a solution—it does not protect us from the cold or the harshness of life , especially with children suffering every night.🙏🙏

While browsing the internet, I came across an advertisement from a Gazan offering to build mobile homes (caravans). According to my conversation with him, a unit measuring 18 square meters (6 x 3 meters) costs $7,500 to build. It includes an unfurnished bedroom, a kitchen, and a bathroom, all ready for use. However, $7,500 is an impossible amount for us under these difficult circumstances.

We urgently need a caravan as a temporary shelter until reconstruction begins and we are able to rebuild our home, God willing.

The current cost of the caravan is $7,500.

As the new year begins, I sit inside our cold tent and ask myself:

Do I even have the right to dream?

I dreamed of welcoming this year in a home that protects us, not in a fragile tent that shakes with every wind and lets the cold creep into our nights.

I dreamed that my children could sleep without fear, and wake up to the smell of bread — not the sound of bombing.

My wish was simple.

A small home. A safe roof. Warmth that feels like the homes we lost.
