I feel like ppl waste too much energy on the "censorship is needed on ao3" discourse (it doesn't, it's been settled for ages.) The real evil is some authors saying they don't OWE the readers a proper tagging. Saying even tho there's smut they won't tag who's top/bottom cuz it's not NECESSARY and some ppl the READERS side with them!?!?!?!?!?

the top/bottom tags really are not necessary. if you buy an erotic book from a bookstore, they won’t tell you which character tops and which one bottoms until you’re reading the book.

ao3 gives people the privilege of tagging system, but a privilege is not a rule or a responsibility.

I have already talked about this before but yes, I personally believe these are only privilege and courtesy (not a rule or a responsibility). therefore writers not tagging their stuff for whatever reason (maybe they don’t want to spoil their works?) doesn’t make them evil either. I mean most books you see in a bookstore or a library are not tagged at all!

sure, I always encourage fanfic writers to tag their stuff properly, but fanfic writers really don’t owe anyone anything.

if they refuse to tag their works then that’s well within their rights. do I agree with them? not necessarily, no, personally, I try to tag my works as properly as I can. but it’s still well within their rights to tag or not to tag whatever they want. you can choose not to read their future works if it bothers you, that is well within your rights.

also worth mentioning that “creator chose not to use archive warnings” is in fact already enough to cover every other tag the author may choose to omit.

Far worse, in my opinion, than the famous “he wouldn’t fucking say that” is “he WOULD fucking say that, as part of his facade, but you seem to think he would mean it genuinely”

Se also “he DID say that and he was LYING, and somehow you didn’t notice.”

“And if I do, then what? I love Thor more dearly than any of you, but you know what he is. He’s arrogant. He’s reckless. He’s dangerous. You saw how he was today. Is that what Asgard needs from its king?”
