    cathodecreature:

A photo of a person holding an elaborate, full-face masquerade mask on a stick. The figure is reclining in a red armchair in front of teal and red curtains decorated with golden streamers. Fake ivy winds around the back and arms of the chair. The left half of the mask is a human face, realistic in proportion but somewhat cartoony in expression and stylization, sporting a wobbly grin, perfectly circular blush and raised brows. Its nose is particularly geometric and overlaps the other half of the mask slightly. It has light skin, carefully painted to match the wearers in color and texture. A pinecone dangles from its pierced ear, and a thin decorative chain connects it to the mask’s ornamented wood-and-brass handle. Delicate white plastic flowers are tucked behind the ear, framing the face. The right half of the face is abstracted, one disembodied eyeball and a ball-and-stick model of an ethanol molecule hovering over a fragmented checkerboard. A thin brass halo frames the mask, emerging from behind the checkerboard and piercing the cheek of the human side. The holder is wearing a black leather vest over a wrinkled white shirt and black, slightly oversized dress pants. He has frizzy, shoulder-length reddish-blonde hair and is wearing two garish, colourful neckties and a string of disco ball beads around his neck. He rests the mask’s chin gently in one ring-clad hand, the handle secured around his forearm by a leather strap; it is not quite aligned with the face beneath.ALT
Another photo of the aforementioned mask being held in front of a red curtain. Only the holders’ arms are visible: one clothed, and one bare.ALT
Another photo of the aforementioned mask being worn. The lighting is different in this one, tinting the holder’s hair a bright pink.ALT

    Dionysus (2025)

Papier-mâché pulp, air-dry clay, wood, brass, chipboard, pulp balls, leather, mesh, acrylics, faux gold leaf

Set out to make a mask that would be a bit more party-friendly than my usual pieces, and before I knew it, this guy had invited himself in.

Another photo of the mask and holder, casually curled up in the chair with one leg slung over the armrest. He has a disco ball in his lap, and a champagne glass full of colourful glass marbles in his free hand.ALT
A waist-up photo of the mask and holder, walking towards the right with the mask held over one shoulder. The holder’s hair obscures their face fully.ALT

Shoutout to two of my pals for helping me out with this shoot! Turns out photography goes a lot smoother when you don’t have to rely on timed shutter release
