Like their Iraqi predecessors in 2003, liberal Iranians in the diaspora who, despite everything, still place their hopes in the American leviathan as a democratising force will be betrayed and horrified by the likely outcome. Either Trump will oversee a military onslaught on Iran with a view to destroying all centralised institutions - subjecting Iranians to political collapse and an unimaginable civil war - or the US will cut a deal with whichever IRGC strongman is corrupt enough to vassalise the country and reopen it to the control of foreign capital. And like in Iraq, the imperial bloodshed and sanitised, rebranded oppression will bear no fruit and any real democracy will be denied. The vulture only cares for the carcass, after all.
