Thirty years ago, a fissure opened in the ocean floor and unleashed creatures from another dimension upon an unsuspecting planet. When the world is ending, only two things can save it: the power of love - and giant, kaiju-fighting robots.

Crystal Palace fled the Jaeger Program after the death of her partner and now scratches out a living hauling stolen parts for illegal mech cage-fights in exchange for cash and the odd ration card. She’s satisfied with the grubby anonymity of her new life, until a face from the past arrives to pull her back into a jaeger.

Niko Sasaki was never supposed to be a jaeger pilot. After the death of her family in a kaiju attack, her guardian moulded her for command: the Jaeger Program is her inheritance. However, in a dying world, plans change, and Niko finds herself preparing to step into battle with the girl whose heart she broke.

A Pacific Rim AU, written for Dead Bang Detectives 2025

HOLLA IT'S CHAPTER TWO AND THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTIIIIIIIING!

Thanks as ever go to @dear-monday and @tumblerislovetumblerislife for being the best cheerleaders a very frazzled fic author could possibly ask for.

Special thanks must go to @the-ipre, who very generously took the time to give me a speed-run through genetic variations, of which they are a specialist. This was GREATLY appreciated, and any abuse of biology and genetics is down to my very unsciency-brain and not their teaching <3

CHAPTER THREE, BABY. Niko and Crystal take a ride in their Get-Along Jaeger, while Charles makes some very unsavoury friends trying to get hold of that kaiju brain!

I am beyond psyched to show you some of the art for this fic, created by the wonderful @pappelsiin who took my garbled ideas and turned them into something I am going to print and frame. Their art is transcendental; please go and show them the love they deserve!

Thank you for the love and the comments; I am pathetically grateful to anyone trundling along with me on this slightly janky ride <333

guy who is definitely not about to fall into a surprise midday nap with an aftermath worse than a hangover: it seems like a really good idea to lay in bed and get cozy under the blanket as part of my plan not to fall asleep. I do not know why.

The fact that in Czech we legit say “the knife in my pocket is opening” when encoutering behavior we hate or find super annoying is something so memey

Like yeah I’m really feeling like stabbing something… but I’m not gonna…. But I’m feeling like it

same in Hungarian! my favourite phrase is to say that someone has ‘knife-opening manners’ i.e. it's like their rudeness makes your pocket knife flip open on its own accord

my other favourite phrase is harder to translate but it's a one-word adjective used to describe someone's face. it literally means the face in question ‘crawls into your palm’ i.e. it's heroically difficult not to slap the person in question because their face invites it in an almost forceful way

does anyone else have a similar phrase?

Dredge teaches you important lessons such as “Fish goes bad quickly at room temperature” and “If you don’t get a good night’s rest the phantom shark will get you”
