i guess this is about her popular reception as much as her scholarship but as i am always saying the two are not discrete entities entirely divorced from one another. also with the caveat that it's a while since i was really up to date with sappho stuff. anyway. i suppose it's no great surprise considering how much scholarship on sappho is influenced by/draws on psychoanalysis & (post-)structuralism & notions of écriture féminine & phallogocentrism etc. etc. but a lot of people really want sappho to stand at the beginning of this tradition of (cis) (lesbian) Women's Writing, expressing a distinct Female Subjectivity which we can uncover and read against Men's Writing. and i'm not saying that there's like never any value in that at all but. i do think it's an approach that obscures how much she *is* reproducing hegemonic 'masculine' idea(l)s in her poetry, especially about class, and also. well this is just straightforwardly cissexist isn't it. like i just don't think it's an approach to sappho that can really take account of sexgender as a social construct, something which was necessarily meaningfully different two and a half thousand years ago in ways which make these readings fundamentally unsound. not to mention that plonking sappho at the beginning of the Women's Literary Tradition is just greece-as-the-cradle-of-western-civilisation-but-make-it-feminist. whatever

Haven't seen anyone talking about it here, but vocal transfeminist and writer Tara Knight has been sent a threat from the fbi insisting that she stop speaking about "radical gender ideology" and get rid of the past 3 years of her work.

A black trans woman is getting personally threatened by the fbi for being a transfeminist. What the fuck. Hopefully this gets more reach than my usual posts so that people who are able to can support her.

putting this here as well

The plot was hatched when a tipster showed up at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic on April 24, 2024, when Joe Biden was president. The informant purported to have information about Maduro's planes, according to three of the officials familiar with the matter.

As the conversation wrapped up, the two people said, Lopez made his pitch: In exchange for secretly ferrying Maduro into America's hands, the pilot would become very rich and beloved by millions of his compatriots. The rendezvous could be of the pilot's choosing: the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

There are perhaps conversations to be had about how the form it takes for domestic consumption differs under different presidents but it needs to be said that naked imperialism in Venezuela down to kidnapping Maduro was already US policy. There are reasons the US Empire is attempting to assert itself like this now specifically, but Trump being so monstrous on this is not particularly aberrant. And this will continue even after he leaves power for as long as the USA is allowed to exist.

really awesome to see syncretized red scare propaganda with war-on-terror propaganda. "shadier and nastier than trump" is when you conduct global trade in spite of the united states of america

you see venezuela NEEDS to have every ship from their allies investigated and siezed by the uscg. they exist on the american continents it's just a security measure. or if they're in the north pacific bc they have to protect their occupying forces. or the south pacific because they have to protect taiwan. or the north atlantic because they basically control NATO anyways. actually america should just investigate all shipping just to be safe.

A message from Venezuela to the world, and to the United States:

Venezuela reaffirms its commitment to peace and peaceful coexistence. Our country aspires to live without external threats, in an environment of respect and international cooperation. We believe that global peace is built by first guaranteeing peace within each nation.

We prioritise moving towards balanced and respectful international relations between the United States and Venezuela, and between Venezuela and other countries in the region, premised on sovereign equality and non-interference. These principles guide our diplomacy with the rest of the world.

We invite the US government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation oriented towards shared development within the framework of international law to strengthen lasting community coexistence.

President Donald Trump, our peoples and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war. This has always been President Nicolás Maduro's message, and it is the message of all of Venezuela right now. This is the Venezuela I believe in and have dedicated my life to. I dream of a Venezuela where all good Venezuelans can come together.

Venezuela has the right to peace, development, sovereignty and a future.

Delcy Rodríguez - Acting President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (4-1-26)
