Do you know what really hurts about Yuji being immortal and unable to grow old? The fact that Gege probably planned it all along, or at least got inspired by a certain fact 🫠

According to scholar Bernard Frank:

Sendai [the city and region where Yuji was born] means "plateau of the immortal ones". It was known since the Heian era for its "rock arches that plunged straight into the water", "its crooked trees hanging on the cliffs", and "its small isles with weird, disconcerting shapes".

This sinuosity, this amount of curves, reminded people of the complex celestial palaces where Chinese scholars imagined immortal spirits to wander, and also of the "breath of life" that flows inside a person's body according to Taoist views, and whose span Taoist believers hope to increase as much as possible.

In 872, a courtier named Minamoto no Toru decided to build a magnificent mansion near Kyoto, called Kawara no in. He based the appearance of its garden and lake on the bay of Shiogama, in the region of Sendai. He hoped this link to the "plateau of the immortals" would bring him and his abode good luck.
