i think it would be fun to crowdsource some resources for non-hockey fans who are writing heated rivalry fic and want to add some verisimilitude into their fics. obviously you don't need to know a ton about the sport itself to write fics about pro hockey players (i have been watching this sport for five years and i still feel like i don't know THAT much), but i bet there are lots of little details people could share about stuff like how nhl travel schedules work, how lineup decisions get made, etc.

here are some initial things:

  • shane and ilya would definitely both be growing truly horrible scraggly beards during the playoffs
  • i assume they would both have pretty gnarly bruises all over their bodies and would be constantly nursing minor to moderately serious injuries (and likely concealing them from each other lol hockey teams do NOT like to disclose the specifics of player injuries). also speaking of the playoffs they would probably both be SUPER injured during their respective playoff runs and playing through it because it's the nhl
  • they would spending a LOT of time on planes
  • somebody talks to the media from the locker room after every game (if it was a bad game it's probably the captain)
  • they would both have pretty intense/rigid pregame routines and superstitions, potentially including things like: not talking to your parents on game day, walking the same exact route into the arena, preparing and eating the same kind of meal at the same time, taping your sticks in a very specific way, doing a special good-luck handshake with your work soulmate or barking furiously like dogs in the tunnel leading onto the ice, etc.
  • pregame nap!!
  • up until this year they were required to wear suits on the plane and while walking into games
  • they'd have their own hotel room unless they're on an entry-level contract (i think this was negotiated during the last lockout?)
  • you really do not get that many days off, esp with travel. actually while watching the show i kept wondering like, would they really have a night together after a game? boston and montreal are close enough that they'd probably be flying home the same night if they weren't on a road trip right? and if they were on a road trip they'd probably be leaving the same night so they could get to the next city, spend the night there, and practice in the morning? however we can do some handwavey stuff here and imagine that they have a more relaxed travel schedule lol

hockey rpfers what else would you add? i also found this interview with nicklas backstrom and i'm sure there's other stuff floating around out there.

I really appreciate that both RR and jacob tierney were like oh no yeah shane genuinely likes rose. they would be a great couple if just one crucial thing were different. they like each other a lot and it’s easy for them to talk to each other. and I love that in the show rose is really curious about shane’s inner life and feelings in a way that helps us see how… stunted, I guess? his relationship with ilya has been. like sure they engaged in small talk about work stuff during the tuna melt scene but ilya’s not asking earnest questions about shane’s childhood and how he’s experienced fame and so on. it reminds me of that wonderful web weaving post about ilya’s childhood (maybe you’ve seen it floating around!) about a method for growing rhubarb called “forcing” that involves growing the plant in total darkness. I feel like shane and ilya’s relationship has been “forced” in a similar way, like made to grow in near-total darkness in this cramped claustrophobic space that doesn’t let either of them grow in the way they should and makes it almost impossible for them to grow or deepen in their relationship as a couple. idk i feel like rose obviously serves a narrative purpose (shane’s gotta realize finally that he can give it the old college try all he wants and it’s just not going to change who he is or how he feels) but I appreciate that being with her also kind of clarifies for shane what he wants emotionally too. he wants that! he wants casual intimacy. he wants a partner he can talk to who likes him and is curious about about his inner life and will let him ask questions about their life too. and I think that is where the total clarity shane has in episode 5 comes from. he’s like oh I know what I want now. and I’ll spend the rest of my life kicking myself if I don’t at least try to have it with the person I want it with. even if that person will of course be kicking and screaming and acting like he’d prefer to have his teeth pulled out with pliers the whole time

“this is ilya, i will never listen to your voicemail” and shane takes that to heart!!

he thinks ilya doesn't ever listen to his messages, so maybe he starts leaving one here and there. maybe they're nothing really, just a note to say he tried to call. sometimes leaving off with "oh, this is shane. by the way" he calls when he knows ilya won't be able to pick up; "hey, uh. i know you won't get this, but i was thinking about you. i miss you. i know you're just in ottawa but... sometimes it feels a lot further. i love you." and sometimes he'll be watching a game and god. he wants to talk to ilya about that play, so he'll leave message about it. shane never really tells ilya that this is something he does.

ilya knows, of course. watches his voicemail fill up little by little. always makes sure there's space for new ones. has ones that he listens to so often that knows them by heart. memorizes the way shane laughs because he thinks no one will hear it, the sound of his breath on the other line between words. he listens to every one of them.
