“what did students do before chatgpt?” well one time i forgot i had a history essay due at my 10am class the morning of so over the course of my 30 minute bus ride to school i awkwardly used by backpack as a desk, sped wrote the essay, and got an A on it.
six months later i re-read the essay prior to the final exam, went ’ohhhh yeah i remember this’, got a question on that topic, and aced it.
point being that actually doing the work is how you learn the material and internalize it. ChatGPT can give you a short cut but you won’t build you the the muscles.

The goal of weight lifting is not to have weights moved, the weights are a tool to develop your muscle mass and help improve and maintain your body’s function.
The goal of homework is not to produce essays, the essays are a tool to develop your ability to take in information, process that information, and communicate your own ideas effectively.
Dont use a forklift in the gym. Dont use chatgpt in the brain gym.
It bothers me so much that the healthcare system relies so much on the patient’s ability to advocate for themselves, organize their history, and be so persistent against every medical “professional” who says there’s nothing wrong/they can do. But so many struggle with fatigue, brain fog, and face such ingrained systemic barriers, that the people who need and deserve help and support can’t access it.
I saw something recently that resonated with me: “Access shouldn’t depend on who has the energy to fight for it.”And I’ve never agreed with anything more.

recently my friend’s comics professor told her that it’s acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can’t generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister’s screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won’t be able to generate a script that’s any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.
It’s only ever the jobs we’re unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don’t.
