He is above, which may mean that he has distanced himself from her, that he is trying to stay away or that he’s changed and grew more than she has. But there is something that still connects them – I see the ladder as a metaphor for that invisible string tugging at them, but also meaning that he is still there for her, ready to come down to her if she asks him to. For me, the house itself represents another thing that links them – the past, the time they spent here together, all the summers they shared.
