reddit (by which i mean Big Reddit TM, which is a type of sports fan mindset that exists beyond the subreddit and can be found just as easily on, say, twitter) is deathly afraid of admitting that any young player who has not won 1+ slams is making any measurable progress in real time and as such it's sort of sociologically funny to see where they decide the present or semi-recent past becomes the eternal unchanging future. jack draper is "he'll never play a full season without injury". shelton is "he's not developing any weapons outside his serve". and with musetti you get a kind of incoherently fearful "ummm No he's not going to go up in the rankings next year or ever because uhhhh the tennis he played good this year he's going to play bad next year" instead of the truth, which is "well we know he's among the top of the tour on natural surfaces, and it'll be interesting to see if he can bring up his hard court tennis to anywhere remotely close. however you can't put safe money on his ascension because every time it matters most sports god is going to hand him a big stick of looney tunes dynamite and watch him blow himself up"
