Hugo whose moral compass doesn’t change at all throughout the journey, only his priorities. Hugo who doesn’t become “good” but instead learns how to play his cards better and take the opportunities life is giving him on a silver platter. Hugo who becomes less self-destructive in his life choices but doesn’t really change. Hugo who is not changed but instead revealed over the course of the story.

++ Hugo and a Team that interact with each other like this, respectively:

If you really keep in mind the fact that Quirin is a knight he starts to make a lot more sense I think. Like the over pragmatism, the stoicism, the never telling anyone anything, the always moving on strategies only he knew, the emotional unavailability towards his own child. Like Ulla wasn’t made to be a mother but Quirin was. Like he wasn’t all that either. Calling him abusive is pushing the hell out of it but he was certainly not great, mid-to-good at most and good on the last season but never great. A bit like his child

The point is that Frederic is (was lmfao) a sheep, he’s a pushover, he’s cowardly, he’s insecure, he’s not even close to be being assertive. Arianna is a humming bird, she longs to be on constant movement, she’s adventurous, she’s much more open, she’s extremely curious and sees the world with wonder, she’s brave.

Or at the least they were all that, and here comes a questioning: exactly how traditional is Corona? Because it’s already been established by the canon (iirc) that Arianna and Willow (?) were. Y’know, Corona by blood, which makes it so that Frederic was married into the family, and considering that Arianna has a much more passive role in what would be her home and given that she seems to be older twin… I mean, it’s not that far off to assume that Frederic only took the throne because Arianna couldn’t rule by herself, because Corona is. I mean, it’s strange because it seems like Rapunzel would have a lot more power than Eugene once she became queen, but at least for Arianna and Frederic we can assume that the situation was much more patriarchy-driven or whatever. That at least for them (and possibly the generations before them), the higher power was always in the hand of the King.

Okay, I’m getting sick of this but essentially I think the reason Frederic is the way he is both because he was never even fit for the amount of power being king would’ve given him and. Y’know. The whole getting your daughter kidnapped thing. Maybe he hoped he would be able to rely more on Arianna? Again, how traditional is Corona!! Not even close to being prepared for the amount of responsibility he’d need to take on, maybe he— IS EQUIS FRANCE???? Okay, sorry, I’m watching the episode. Maybe he was overcompensating with all his controlling tendencies, but I believe that it only truly came crashing down after Rapunzel was kidnapped. Because I’m pretty that’s what was implied in the show, that Corona only got insane over criminals post-kidnapping due to. Y’know.

Essentially: insecure sheepish man + ridiculous amounts of power + pressure to take up on a role buddy was not fit for + depression and high levels of paranoia after his daughter was kidnapped = one single scene used to demonize Varian is not the paralleling you think it is, writer team. I needed a full season of much more nuance for that entire conflict and also the cop out of EVERYTHING that Frederic did in first season via memory wiping was insane. But also Frederic is not nearly as bad as some people portray him to be. Happens.

Also Arianna barely even has a character because misogyny, I’m guessing. What is agency, I don’t know her

Can I ☝🏼 push it ☝🏼 a little bit? 🤏🏼 Okay thank you ☺️

Rapunzel’s over exaggeration of the situation between the King and Queen in King and Queen of Hearts is. I mean, that’s a learnt behaviour.

Besides it just being for comedic cartoon effect (and I genuinely believe most of the mess surrounding Rapunzel’s character comes not only from whatever is going on with Chris but also the difference in tone between the movie from 2010 and the cartoon show from 2017, I mean Eugene was stabbed on scene in the movie ffs), we have an Entire Song which is just Mother Gothel Over Exaggerating Every Situation To Instil Fear On Rapunzel. And okay it’s been two years but. Eighteen years y’know

I hate how much people don’t explore. Like. How qfad affected Rapunzel and specially the promises thing because the goal was so clearly to break something that for Rapunzel was like a core value at maximum and a huge deal at minimum, Rapunzel never breaking promises is something that’s established ridiculously early in the movie and in the cruise musical (do tell me if in the movie as well) they develop on it the slightest bit more when Gothel makes her promise she’ll never talk about the floating lights or about leaving anymore, the implication is that that was something Gothel weaponized against her much like. Everything Rapunzel was if I’m being honest; her hair, her kindness, her love that’s bigger than her body. Thematically, that’s why Varian’s villain arc existed. And a lot of people seem to ignore or forget that Rapunzel spent eighteen years of her life locked up in a tower with only Gothel and a chameleon for company, she lost eighteen years of proper, healthy human interaction of course she will fuck up almost everything. I don’t remember if anyone ever moved to help her out with handling that in a significant manner so I don’t want to affirm they didn’t, leaving that up to you. And Rapunzel clearly hasn’t lost that lack of distrust in authority figures because in the books when Nigel and Frederic tell her everything is alright in Old Corona she believes them and assumes that Varian is just ignoring her because he’s mad at her. It’s just insane to me how much a protagonist can be mishandled in her own show
