Small Signs That a Whumpee is Not Okay

    • fumbling tasks that they normally perform without second thought, maybe dropping items in the process or having to pause and try to make their hands stop shaking
    • stumbling unexpectedly, catching themselves on a wall or a piece of furniture and perhaps blinking dazedly as they try to clear the sudden fog from their brain
    • having to stop for rest, strangely out of breath even though they haven’t been working all that hard at anything
    • leaving their food mostly untouched, claiming they’re not hungry or that they already ate
    • taking a bit longer than they should to register what other people are saying to them and to formulate a response
    • coughing occasionally and brushing off anyone who mentions it; “it’s just a cold”
    • being unusually quiet and withdrawn, especially if they’re normally talking everyone else’s ears off, making stupid jokes, pestering others, etc.
    • keeping their coat on even though everyone else has shed theirs because it’s too warm to be wearing one (or the opposite: unzipping their coat and shedding their scarf and gloves even though it’s certainly cold enough to be wearing them)
    • sitting or lying around instead of getting up and helping with whatever work is at hand, especially if this is very unusual behavior for them
    • spacing out, with others having to practically shout their name in their ear to get them to snap out of it and respond
    • losing time—one minute, they’re in their house; the next, they’re at work, and a whole hour has passed without them noticing
    • squeezing their eyes shut/grimacing/wincing in pain
    • subtly keeping their hand pressed against their side or their arm wrapped around themselves
    • falling behind the others since they’re moving slower than usual
    • having others comment on how they look pale or unwell
    • remarking on how they haven’t been sleeping well for some reason

Random, not original sickfic things because I caught whatever is going around:

    • Falling asleep at their desk
    • Falling asleep on the bus or train and missing their stop
    • Complaining about a mild symptom while hiding a more serious one
    • Getting unexpectedly emotional as a precursor to getting sick
    • “That doesn’t sound good…”
    • Getting sick on vacation
    • “Whoa! Sit down - let me get you some water.”
    • Wanting comfort from someone who is no longer around
    • False recovery: Whumpee has more energy, thinks they’ve gotten over the illness, does too much too soon and crashes hard
    • Coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose so hard they get dizzy
    • Unwell during work/school and getting worse until their boss/teacher/mentor pulls them aside to ask if they’re ok
    • A mid-sentence coughing fit
    • “I’ll take care of things today, you just focus on getting better.”
    • “You sure you don’t want anything?”
    • After whumpee admits that they’re sick, things seem to worsen quickly when really, they just stopped trying to hide it.
    • “I think I’m gonna go to bed early tonight.”
    • Exhausted yet unable to fall asleep
    • Whumpee who “never gets sick” and refuses to believe it vs. Whumpee who gets sick easily and apologizes every time.
    • Achy, chilled to the bone, and lovingly draped in a blanket

I pay a lot of lip service to this without ever really dwelling on it, but something I LOVE in sickfic is like the “day 0” of an illness where a character is having experiences that COULD be signs of an illness or could just be one-off biological oddities (fatigue, headache, sore throat, colder than usual, etc). I just think it’s neat

LOVE THIS. not to talk AGAIN about the fic i’m working on on my main but it’s relevant:

whumpee is super fatigued but blames it on a long drive, then gets an episode of vertigo and almost passes out but blames the exhaustion and a migraine, because now their head hurts, too. then in the middle of the night their fever spikes and theyre like oh okay that’s what that was.

just super love it when they blame it on something else at first lol. dramatic irony

Trembling/shaking in pain is such a good whump thing especially with hidden injury because there’s no way for them to hide their pain if their body decides to just. start vibrating.

    Catching Whumpee…:

    • Bandaging themselves, hisses of pain as they treat their wounds and hide evidence of their injury
    • Sneaking away from the crowd, looking pale and unwell
    • Sitting down when the rest of the team isn’t looking
    • Struggling to catch their breath
    • Needing to slow down or stop “for just a moment”
    • Taking an uncharacteristic nap (either completely exhausted or something is Very Wrong)
    • “I’ll catch up with you guys in a sec!”
    • Staring at an item that has significant (or traumatic) meaning to them
    • When they can’t hold back their tears any longer
    • “Sorry- I didn’t know you were there…”
    • “Get out!”
    • Looking lost
    • Gazing at their old scars and faded bruises
    • Taking medication for a problem the other character never knew they had
    • Showing a symptom they denied having
    • In much more pain than they originally let on
    • When they’re having an off day and a small thing causes them to lash out/break down/panic
    • “(Please) Don’t tell anyone about this.”
    • Sleeping later than usual
    • Still awake (or not sleeping at all)
    • Grimaces and pain noises when they think no one can hear or see them, trying to get into a more comfortable position
    • When they’re finally left alone and all the energy they put into acting normal/well vanishes
    • With that distant look in their eyes
    • Literally catching whumpee as they start to lose consciousness

when a character is so badly hurt/sick that their demeanour switches up entirely

    • chatty characters pale-faced and silent
    • quiet and reserved characters rambling deliriously
    • character who always resorts to humour clearly trying to think of a quip but coming up empty
    • no-nonsense character so loopy that they can’t stop giggling
    • a stoic character’s hands trembling in panic
    • an easily frightened character so far out of it that they aren’t aware of what’s happening to them, much less afraid
    • intelligent characters who can’t think straight
    • protective (self-sacrificial) characters letting someone else take the fall for them because they’re too weak to object
    • patient characters snapping at whoever comes near
    • affectionate character who wants to be alone
    • lone wolf who begs you to stay a minute longer.

    Fainting Mid-Conversation Whump

    • “Hey, where is that puddle of… blood coming… from…”
    • “Wait, wait, give me… Give me a second, need to…”
    • “Huh? No, no, I’m good, I just… Need a second…”
    • “Oh, shit wait, I’m gonna—“
    • *wordless sound of a body dropping*
    • “I’m not feeling too well… Shit…”
    • “Wait, give me a sec, I’m seeing stars… Oh, shit—“
    • “No, go ahead, I’ll catch up in just a second…”
    • “I’m sorry, I can’t… I can’t keep going…”

It is so annoying when authors try to make their characters seem tough by making them sleep deprived and then just having them “power through it” with no side effects besides feeling REALLY tired. Your characters had five hours of sleep over three days, they’re not just “tired”. They’re forgetting shit. They’re passing out at random moments. They’re probably hallucinating. And they are certainly not going to win a fight when their reaction time is somewhere between “next Tuesday” and “never”.
