Making this as my pinned post regarding my Final Fantasy IV novelization.

I’m doing this because I love this game and I think about it a lot, especially when questions of what redemption means or what a good redemption arc is come up. Since FFIV was originally a Super Nintendo game, it sometimes feels a little basic. Sometimes that means it feels a little like a fairy tale, or feels like the outline of a much bigger story that the player is invited to make up parts of themselves.

So I did.

While I feel I’m a decent writer, I have a hard time finishing anything longform. Using the original game as an outline makes up for some of my deficiencies with decision making and plotting.

It doesn’t make up for my deficiencies in actually writing regularly, however, which is something I’m working on.

I’m trying to make this work as fanfic for people who love the game, and also work as a standalone work for people who have never played it. Why not give it a try?

hot take: aether currents in ffxiv aren’t that bad at all. in fact it’s kind of nice to take a little walk around and have an incentive to navigate an environment. like outside of field operation content there isn’t a lot of “explore this area” type stuff to do in the game. dungeons are linear corridors, raids are single room arenas. the game making you occasionally figure out how to climb a mountain is good for your health

My toxic fandom take is that I think that it’s awful how much we can talk to creators and get answers from them word of god style. We should be out here in a godless place rooting for scraps of lore in the media like truffle pigs out in the fields

if you procrastinate and let enough enough distinct but interdependent tasks build up the world starts to look and feel like a william blake painting

fantasy is when the character is allegedly an assassin but does very little actual assassin work. sci fi is when the character is allegedly a bounty hunter but does very little actual bounty hunting

if i get to a store a few minutes before they open i wait another ~10-20 minutes before i go inside so the employees don’t think i’m the kind of freak who was waiting at the door for them to open. this does make me a different kind of freak but that’s a secret kind of freak the employees don’t know i am. also the employees don’t give a single goddamn fuck if you are waiting outside for the moment the door unlocks, but as previously stated, i am that kind of freak. but secretly. which is the important part.
