it's so easy to think to yourself "i don't have anything to hide, what do i have to worry about?" but having morals and generally doing your best not to hurt anyone will not save you. you can never be good or pure enough for these people. the target is constantly shifting and if they cannot find dirt on you they will change gears and tighten the circle of acceptable behaviors until you fit their new description of a threat. you are fully disposable to them and they are waiting to take the shot. don't confront them, don't give them the opportunity to darvo you. just hit the bricks 👍 the peace will be worth it
this post exploded overnight and my notes are full of people sharing their experiences in the tags. you all have my condolences. my favorite tag on this post said something along the lines of "if you're scared of your friends, those aren't your friends" so i hope y'all will wake up one day and realize you haven't been afraid of your friends for a very long time. it's possible i promise :)
the way Steven Universe sticks hard to its Steven-only perspective can be frustrating, and I get why it's criticized, but the more I think about it the more that frustration feels intentional. the point of the show being structured that way IS to emphasize the frustration of a limited perspective where information is omitted until someone decides to tell you, or you personally seek it out.
so much of Steven Universe is about a child discovering firsthand that his guardians are complicated and flawed, and make huge mistakes and keep bombshell secrets, and having to deal with the fallout. sticking to Steven's perspective is vital to the impact of those events. we as the audience are meant to learn details as Steven learns them, to experience the drama and earth-shattering revelations through his eyes, because that's the point. it's not just about these things happening, it's about them happening specifically through the eyes of a child, and what that means for his relationships with the people involved. because children have limited perspective, and get lied to all the time. growing up often involves learning about major things in your life that were going on under your nose the whole time, that you didn't know about until someone decided to tell you. and it's frustrating! Steven's frustrated by his limited perspective too! it's not a meaningless oversight that the show is structured that way, it's part of the point. it's thematically relevant
#i fucking love that episode where steven and greg go on the trip to the next state over and get a hotel but garnet comes with #and her drama with pearl ends up kind of ruining the whole trip for steven. bc ruby and sapphire keep arguing about it #but in the end they realize theyre upsetting him and they realize theyre being childish and make up #it’s just like. it’s SO good. it’s so fucking good #it captures those exact vibes of being a child on a road trip so perfectly #of seeing adults around you have beef and not even fully understanding why #it’s so good. it all being through steven’s eyes is SO GOOD #su pretends to be a fantasy sci fi epic but mostly it’s a family drama #mostly it’s about steven learning to reconcile two sides of his family and two halves of himself
#and no i don’t think it was actually the gems’ fault that steven was traumatized. no they actually did NOT put all their problems on him #steven literally constantly DEMANDS that they let him be a part of those conversations. he DEMANDS to be taken seriously as a family member #that’s actually the plot of the entire first season if you can believe it #’i’m a crystal gem too!’ #it DID fuck steven up to be a part of the drama— but it would have fucked up s1 steven if he WASN’T #he never would have gained confidence in himself if the gems didn’t start trusting him on adventures. that’s literally the WHOLE PLOT #(sorry i’m just so tired of the endless slander of steven’s family. the point of the show isn’t that all adults are evil.. #the point is that they’re PEOPLE. yea them trusting steven ended up fucking him over later. but that’s what HE BEGGED FOR. #the whole plot twist with rose is supposed to tell you — oh my god these are just people. rose was just a person #just a regular ass woman who was trying to change and leave the horrors of her past behind!! #steven’s family isn’t evil they’re just a normal fucking family with problems in their past. oh and aliens)
