First Terrace records Japan Tour
First Terrace Recordsは、2016年にAlex Ives＆Joseph Summersによって設立されたロンドンを拠点とするレーベルです。アンビエント、エクスペリメンタル、ドローン、インプロヴィゼーション、サウンドアートなどの領域を独自の審美眼によりセレクトしつつ、K. Leimerのような伝説的なアンビエントのアーティストの作品もリリースしています。ロンドンにある、Cafe otoでのインプロヴィゼーションのイベントなども開催しました。
今回 First Terrace Recordsのショーケースとして、レーベルより３組のアーティストが来日、同レーベルよりリリースのあるChihei Hatakeyamaが全ての公演で同行、国内５カ所のツアーを敢行します。

SPECIMENSはロンドンに拠点を置くアーティスト兼プロデューサーのAlex Ives(アレックス・アイブス）のソロプロジェクトです。
彼の作品は、カセットループ、アンビエントドローン、歪んだピアノサンプル、サクソフォン、不協和音、実験的周波数などを使って、自己認識と人種的アイデンティティの方法を探検しています。
彼はこれまでMachinefabriek, Midori Hirano, Chihei Hatakeyama, John Benceなどと一緒に演奏する音楽プロジェクトを通して、ヨーロッパ、日本、アメリカをツアーしました。

Specimens is the London based artist & producer Alex Ives. His work explores the avenues of self awareness & racial identity through the medium of cassette loops, ambient drones, distorted piano samples, saxophone and experimental frequencies. Alongside running First Terrace Records with Alex Ives (Specimens), “Skip” Summers is an instrument builder, performance maker and improvisor. Previous happenings include an opera for pirate radio & binoculars, a live film score for Derek Jarman’s ’The Last Of England’, a playable installation in a tree and a Berlin performance that culminated in the burial of a lamb’s head.
He is preparing a new show (and new instruments) for his first visit to Japan.

Vida Vojić (aka Vida Voyage) is a Sweden-born Berlin-based sound artist. She aims to express that which is suppressed underneath - the voice, sounds and words grow into new worlds - the voyage is continuous. During her live performances, the listeners are placed on an ambient plate through which they smoothly enter growing desires, endless enigmas and forgotten senses. Through an ever expanding dream-state, this sonic cruise can be both comforting and confronting as it takes one down a path full of subtle wake-up calls, shifting perspectives and subconscious transformations. As we leave rationality behind, we return to the present flow, cherishing the moments that can be lived rather than understood.
Artist Statement:
”Unconsciously, I ended up in sound to express the invisible inside. Everything interconnected, a feeling in my chest, turned into a tone, grew into a new world. I aim for purity - what is suppressed underneath the intellect. It is a physical reaction to the confrontation of myself, removing the barriers between me and the reflection of me - the sound. The biggest loss is to forget to feel. I seek to get as close to feelings as possible, without the need of explanation in between, leaving an open end to the expression. Perhaps that is when thinking becomes irrelevant, and listening becomes something you do with your body first, and thought secondly.”

chihei hatakeyama accidentally saw their live show in tokyo.
The content of their lyrics was a song that sang about the hometown of hatakeyam, so he was deeply impressed.
The musicality was low-fi fork, somewhat like velvet underground.
ya mai mo is a low-fi fork rock band by Tayuki Sakyo, who is a guitar vocalist, and Tayu Kawakubo, who is a drum, focusing on guitar vocals.
Sometimes awkward, casual vocals echo between waves on tracks with mysterious weakness that are influenced by ambient and abstract hip hop.
The lyrics are cynical, sometimes straight, and carefully crafted stories. It unites with the sound, and it penetrates to the heart as it brings a small NO in the era of global capitalism.
The mix is done by Goony on the outside, and it’s an addictive sound, such as the reverb processing of the guitar sound that reminds of “Sunday Morning” on velvet underground.
Mastering was done by ambient drone writer Chihei Hatakeyama.
ya mai moはギターヴォーカルを担当するニートたけしを中心にギターの佐京泰之、ドラムの川久保尊由によるローファイフォークロック・バンドです。
アンビエントやアブストラクトヒップホップに影響された不可思議な脱力感のあるトラックに、時に不格好で、さりげないヴォーカルが波間に漂うように響きます。
歌詞はシニカルに時にストレートに、丁寧に物語を紡ぎます。それはサウンドと一体になって、グローバル資本主義全盛の時代に、ささやかなNOを突きつけるように心に染み渡ります。
ミックスはのっぽのグーニーが担当し、velvet undergroundの「Sunday Morning」を思い出させるギターサウンドのリヴァーブ処理など、中毒性のあるサウンドに仕上がっています。
マスタリングはアンビエント・ドローン作家のChihei Hatakeyamaが担当しました。

A whisper-like, fine-grained analog synth sounds like an empty can thrown away on a longing road
The tone of the analog synth with an indefinite pitch overlaps with the melodic tone of the electric guitar and fades away as it is sucked into a huge gravity or black hole.
The reverbs and delays of strymon and eventide invite guitar drone into the poetics of sorrow that is sucked into a huge mist, and it becomes a reverberation of rage.

世界を彷徨するChihei Hatakeyamaの初のコラボレーションアルバムが完成した。
Jodo(浄土）と名付けられた今作はささやくように微細なアナログシンセの、掠れた道に打ち捨てられた空き缶のような音色から物語が始まる。
ピッチの定まらないアナログシンセの音色は巨大な重力に、あるいはブラックホールに吸い込まれるように、エレクトリックギターのメロコリックな音色に重なり、消えてゆく。
strymonとeventideのリヴァーブとディレイは巨大な霧に吸い込まれるような悲しみの詩学の中へギタードローンを誘い込み、怒濤の残響となって響き渡る。

Profile
Stijn Hüwels is a Belgian musician with a profound fascination for minimalism. His work is defined by long-form pieces, using processed guitar and field recordings. Next to solo work, he collaborated with Tomoyoshi Date, Norihito Suda, Danny Clay and Ian Hawgood. Together with James Murray, Hüwels is part of Silent Vigils. His music is released on Dauw, Eilean, Glass Reservoir, mAtter and Home Normal.
Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist , an organizer and mastering engineer who was born in 1978, and lives in the Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama got involved in playing music through strumming a electric guitar in a few rock-oriented bands in his teenage years. Subsequently a laptop computer superseded his bands as his main platform. Hatakeyama polychromes memory-evoking soundscapes with various recorded materials of acoustic instruments such as guitars, vibraphone, and piano; mostly played by hand and processed time and time again via laptop. His first album Minima Moralia was commissioned for release by the Chicago-based label kranky in early 2006.
Since then his many album was released by Room 40, Under The Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Nomal, OwnRecords, Spekk, Dronarivm, Constellation Tatsu, Glacial Movements Records and his own label White Paddy Mountain.
In 2013 Hatakeyama founded the record label White Paddy Montain, which since then has released over 40 recordings by some of the most accomplished musicians and modern ambient musicians, Shoegazer and folk musicians in Japan.
Recent years Hatakeyama continues to evolve his sound by analog synthesizer, modular synthesizer and compact guitar effector. Hatakeyama approaches some modular synthesizer and electric guitar drone project with an expectation of new directions.

これまでマレーシアのレーベル”mu-nest”より3枚のアルバムをリリースしているokamotonoriaki(オカモトノリアキ）は映像や音楽を用いた時間表現を制作する作家として知られている。最新作『IIKO』は初の日本国内からのリリースとなった。
ノイズの入ったブラウン管の映像のようなものを意識して作曲されたという今作は「post」という言葉をコンセプトにしている。それはAIやクローン人間などに代表される自然科学の急速な発展の前に人の生活が追いつかなくなるのではないか、という危惧である。そして近い将来に起こるであろう人の存在の在り方の変容、そういったものがコンセプトになっている。
『IIKO』は近未来的なシンセの音色、叙情的なメロディ、古い学校のオルガンや、アジアの各街のフィールドレコーディング等、終末的な世界観が意識されつつもそこに僅かな希望を見いだせるような、映画のようなストーリーを描く大作となった。
精緻にプログラミングされた楽曲にfraqsea（フラクシー）とSatomimagae（サトミマガエ）の繊細なヴォーカルが絡みながら、螺旋を描く上質な歌ものエレクトロニカの金字塔！
デザインはベルリン、日本を中心に活動するデザインユニット、シンプル組合が担当し、okamotonoriakiみずから制作するMVではモデルのShin Lee、イギリス在住の身体表現者Masumi Saitoとのコラボレーションとなった。
okamotonoriaki is an audio-visual artist based in North Kanto. He has released 3 album and 1 EP from Malaysia Label ”mu-nest”.he composed songs on this album, which is very reminiscent of the music early 21st Century electronic music like mum and Lali Puna.Two delicate vocalists of fraqsea and Satomimagae participate in elaborately programmed songs on this album.
Noriaki is an artist who believes that “the process of producing video or music is the process of outputting little stories that come up in my mind. Each work is like a note to remember the little story that popped up from nowhere.”

1983年大阪生まれ。音楽家・映像作家。
音源のリリースやパフォーマンス、映像作品の制作や発表、様々なジャンルとのコラボレーション、ワークショップなど、フォーマットに捉われない様々な表現を国内外で発表している。
2010年より音楽家として、マレーシアのレーベル”mu-nest”より3枚のアルバムと1枚のEPを発表、アジア各地で映像と音楽を用いたパフォーマンスを成功させている。
2018年に各地の友人から収集した日常の風景映像を基に制作した27分の組曲”HERE/THERE”を発表。
2017年には映像作家としてインドの綿布を取り上げた”KHADI”展にてドキュメンタリー映像を制作。21_21 DESIGN SIGHTにて発表。評価を得る。
2019年初旬に、台湾の音楽家”Misi Ke”とのコラボレーション作品を日本、台湾で発表予定。

Afterimage（残像）と題された本作はイスタンブールの骨董品屋で畠山が出会った一枚の写真から始まった。（その写真はジャケットに使われている）
母親と娘らしい二人の女性が写っている写真。撮影したのは父親、夫であろうか。この家族にどのようなストーリーがあり、いつの時代のものだろうか。
この写真に刻まれた家族の幸せの記録、そして、記憶。畠山は何故かこの写真に惹かれるものがあり、それゆえにこの写真からインスピレーションを受け、アルバムとして一つの物語を形作った。
掠れたピアノのサンプル、オーヴァードライブしつつあるエレクトリックギターの狭間で、記憶の残像が立ち表れては消え、霞の向こうに疾走する。
霧のようなコーラスモジュレーションから立ち上がるメロディツクなドローンサウンド、牧歌的なアルペジオ。
写真の中の二人の女性から受ける印象を抽象画的な色彩で描くギターアンビエントの新たな１枚が誕生した。
This album entitled Afterimage (afterimage) was composed in inspiration from a piece of photograph Hatakeyama found in Istanbul’s antique store.

Between piled piano and over drive electric guitar, when the afterimage of memory disappears, it disappears and runs over the haze.
A melodic drone sound and an idyllic arpeggio standing up from a chorus modulation like a blurred fog.
A new piece of guitar ambient was born the impression received from the two women in the photograph.

Watch: short doc about Chihei Hatakeyama
As a part of their video series ‘toco toco’, Japanese content platform Archipel made a short documentary about ambient musician, sound artist, mastering engineer and record label founder Chihei Hatakeyama. Now based in Tokyo, the video follows Hatakeyama - a master in creating atmospheric, memory-evoking soundscapes -, back to his roots in the Kamakura and Enoshima areas of Japan, where he grew up.
