Elephants eat 300+ pounds of foliage a day so they’re almost always moving and grazing in their waking hours but they will stop if another elephant cannot walk. They’re known to try to pick up the fallen elephant and stand and wait for them to remain enough strength to rise and walk if the elephant is injured or ill. Some Asian elephants reportedly guide injured wild elephants back to humans for help. I can’t help but think about adage attributed to Margaret Mead, first sign of civilization is a healed human femur. We know Neanderthals cared for the individuals in their community because there are archeological finds of Neanderthals with disabilities and healed major injuries that would have required the group assisting the individual to eat and drink during their recovery, instead of seeing the injured or disabled Neanderthal as a waste of resources, they valued them as an individual and were willing to put work into their recovery and survival. Elephants seem to view members of their species in the same way but due to their anatomy and cognition, they have a harder time rendering medical aid themselves, though they want to help.
The idea that Wizard Mites are a specific species of intelligent parasite that feeds on magic is a misconception.
The reality is that after a few years practicing magic, the existing, mundane mites that already live on your skin and in your hair have simply absorbed enough residual thaumic energy that they spontaneously become sentient and begin to self organize into societies.
The notion that they feed off magic came about because wizards infested with particularly hostile mites have little choice but to stop practicing magic entirely. This only really occurs in the case that multiple mite empires on a single wizard are at war with each other and have developed weapons destructive enough to threaten the health of the wizard herself. If the wizard is unable to step in and broker a peace, her best course of action is to commence a spell-fast and starve the mites of the magic residue which grants them their intelligence. The mites don’t literally starve, of course, they just revert to their pre-uplift animal state, at which point the wizard can always resume her regular activities and hope for a more agreeable sociopolitical situation when the next crop of mite societies emerge.
Non-magical onlookers encountered spell-fasting wizards and without full context assumed the mites robbed them of their magical ability, and thus the “magic parasite” concept was born. But the reality is that in most cases a wizard and her mites have a mutualistic relationship and can even act as collaborators. Wizards have been known to coauthor grimoires with their mites or send their mites on covert missions to rivals’ eyelashes as spies.
