I’m not sure where you got deputy paramedic chief from, but that’s 4 ranks up from where Sylvie is at. Their order is PIC -> Ambulance Commander -> Paramedic Field Chief -> Assistant Deputy Chief Paramedic -> Deputy Chief Paramedic -> Chief Paramedic. Ambulance commanders don’t sit behind a desk most of the time, they are called to supervise pretty much any scene where there are a large number of victims/triage taking place. If it’s large enough, they supervise the EMS side of the scene until a paramedic field chief arrives. Just like a battalion chief, there is more paperwork, but they regularly go to larger calls and direct everyone. They also help out when needed and treat patients.
I’m also a little confused why you think she has to decide between her career and her family, but also think she wouldn’t stop being a paramedic for a desk job? Maybe she’d want to do something less dangerous now that she has a family?
As for the Portland aspect, I don’t understand why they’d do the storyline of Matt saying he wants to return to Chicago and that Ben will be off to college next year in 11x18. Why would Matt stay in Portland if both boys were off at college? In 10x07, Sylvie said that Griffin was thinking about attending the fire academy after college. I think it’s perfectly reasonable that Ben and Griffin could move back to Chicago with Matt, Ben for college and Griffin for the fire academy. Or maybe they’re both at college in different states, that doesn’t mean they can’t be a family. They are adults (or soon will be for Ben), they don’t have to live with Matt and Sylvie to be part of their family.
Matt has made it clear he’s a Chicago guy and Sylvie has said Chicago is her home time and time again. If they’re going to be off screen anyway, why not have them be in the city they both love and building their family there?
I don’t think Matt’s line during the proposal was saying he’s staying in Portland and wants Sylvie to move there with him. He was in Chicago visiting and was just saying he wanted to give her the ring before flying back. The finale aired in May, so my guess is Ben’s graduation was in June and he’d be in Portland until he sent Ben off to college in the late summer/fall.
I really don’t think Matt would ask her to move to Portland again, both because he won’t be there much longer (or is already back), and because she already said no to moving. He had a ring and still let her go because he knew she wasn’t happy with long distance and didn’t want to move there. She just experienced probably the biggest moment of her life in becoming a mom, I don’t think Matt would ambush her and ask for something he already knows she doesn’t want.
Sylvie, Matt, Julia, Ben, and Griffin can start their life as a new family anywhere, and I think they would all choose Chicago.
