How to write a morally grey character

There are good guys and there are bad guys. But the world is not just black and white and neither are everyone’s morals.

What makes someone morally grey?

You could also call it morally ambiguous. They are real people with their own ideas and motivations and the possibility to change their ways when there is enough incentive. They are neither pure good, nor pure evil.

Which just makes them human and to an extend that includes everyone. So in fiction, this is often a character that is unpredictable, the reader can’t be sure on what side they are on. It could change.

How to create them

  • decide on a balance between good traits and bad traits
  • give them understandable motives
  • give them motivations that would make them work for the good cause and motivations that would make them work for the bad ones
  • give them a moral compass and a set of rules that they would usually follow
  • but also give them personal goals that interfer with that
  • show them having to make decisions that can lead to real consequences

Tips

  • don’t make them overly mysterious, the reader should understand where they are coming from with their decisions
  • but you can create surprise by giving two good and believable options to choose and make the readers be on the edge of their seat to find out which one they choose
  • decide between the character making active choices or the character passively letting things happen that puts them in both the good and the bad box

Examples:

A character who sees the good that the hero is doing and wants to support them in saving the city, but doing that would interfer with their personal goal (saving their family for example) - the reader can’t be sure which way they will choose

A character is generally doing good things, but when something bad happens, they tolerate it and don’t stop it, passively being on the side of evil.

i was pondering another scenario of how satoru and tsuna could meet in my fics.

suguru and tsuna being childhood friends.

the geto family moves to namimori shortly after tsuna ia sealed. suguru saves her from bullies and two strike a friendship. tsuna can’’t see curses, but she knows geto can see what others can’t. geto protects tsuna from curses and generally sticks close because even sealed, sky flames make his technique bearable.

they grow up to be thick as thieves. geto even gains a crush (tsuna is oblivious).

until reborn arrives and canon of khr happens. tsuna starts to pull away because she wants her best friend away from the chaos. geto, seeing a group form around tsuna and the constant secrets, thinks he has been replaced.

the distance between the two grows when geto gets into jujutsu high, though they still keep in contact.

gojo, for his part heard about suguru’s best friend before him. both he and shoko instantly pick up on the on the crush that seems one-sided.

it all comes to a head after star plasma arc. once geto kills his parents tsuna is the one to discover the crime scene due to sakura and takeru being suspiciously absent. mukuro confirms it was geto’s technique that did the deed. unable to believe her best friend is a murderer, tsuna tracks him down to his new cult where they have a confrontation and break off things for good.

heartbroken, tsuna leaves the cult only to run into equally heartbroken gojo.

having thoughts about spn x dark angel crossover.

  • post canon of dark angel is set in supernatural timeline.
  • season six fix it where adam is out of the cage as well.
  • since sam is souless and micheal is still in adam’s head, dean drops the latter off at alec’s place to avoid trouble.
  • alec is like “what the fuck dude” but lets adam stay since he owes dean one (regarding his absence between proof of purchase and two; maybe even explain why he was absent in harbor lights episode).
  • micheal is sort of depreesed over his father not appearing as was preordained, so he is mostly quiet and doesn’t react to alec being an enhanced human. much.
  • cue transgenic, an archangel and a winchester trying to coexist.
  • as they bond and adam tries to pierce his life together, he asks alec to train him in the hunting business cause it’s obvious he ain’t getting out anytime soon. plus, ghoul trauma. alec is hesitant at first, but agrees. the three of them unofficially form team free will, seattle edition.
  • adam also resumes his med studies and alec finds him job at crash as a bartender.
  • meanwhile asha, who tries to get over her heartbreak with logan, notices the new guy whom alec seems close with and is pretty protective of?
  • age difference cause asha is like in her 30’s and adam is in his 20’s.
  • don’t forget micheal in adam’s head, giving dry commentary and thinking humans are idiots when it comes to romance. not that he knows what romance is.
  • alec torn between amusement and protectivness cause. asha, good for you finding a new guy, but. can you stop flirting? that’s my littile brother. sorta.
  • dean and sam living through season 6 and being unaware of the drama.

i was thinking - since jensen now has soldier boy in his arsenal of roles, and the boys’ present timeline is set in the same year as dark angel, i can see soldier boy being ben and alec’s genetic donor.

don’t get me wrong, i love “dean winchester is the donor” au, but soldier boy fits the role too. especially since he was in cryo before his debut. manticore totally could have snatched his dna.

i dunno, but there’s something fascinating in alec meeting soldier boy. asshole (affectionate) meets another asshole (derogatory). they just wouldn’t click.

and the thought of another ben being a pain in alec’s ass is ironic as hell.
