Haibun: A Writer’s Guide Paperback – June 8, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Haibun—the ancient Japanese form combining haiku and prose—has, over the past decades, been adopted and adapted by writers worldwide. Yet, despite its dynamic growth, much about the form remains misunderstood. In Haibun: A Writer’s Guide, three experienced editors and writers explore what goes into a good haibun and how its components (title, prose, haiku) connect to spark new insights and epiphanies. The authors also trace the history of English-language haibun, demonstrate the ways in which a haibun can resonate with readers, and illustrate how writers are pushing the boundaries of the form without losing its essence. With dozens of examples, resources, and writing prompts, Haibun: A Writer’s Guide will lead you to a new understanding and appreciation of this ever-evolving form.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2023An insightful and inspiring journey through haibun, a combination of haiku and prose that’s rapidly growing in popularity. Not just for haiku and haibun poets, this guide is for anyone interested in poetry and innovative ways to tell stories. Written by three respected journal editors of contemporary English-language haibun, the book provides a quick history of haibun, starting in Japan and following its migration to North America, the UK, and beyond. It then launches into how to read and appreciate haibun (hint: it has to do with the sparks on the cover), and how to write it, including a quick primer on haiku, which are essential to good haibun. Numerous, creative variations on the form are provided, along with in-depth commentary, over 30 writing exercises, and further resources, including journals that publish haibun, essays about haibun, websites about haibun and haiku, and haibun contests. (Click on the “See Inside” icon to view the complete Table of Contents.) Also, for those interested in submitting their haibun to journals, the authors provide advice based on their experience both as editors and as writers themselves. This is an excellent primer for learning how to write haibun, as well as how to hone your haibun skills and challenge yourself to write sublime poems. Highly recommended!!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023Reading this book is like going on a tour of contemporary haibun, led by a trio of knowledgeable friends. Beary, Watts, and Youmans offer insightful commentary, friendly encouragement, and occasional astringent advice. They provide excellent examples of contemporary haibun and elucidate a broader array of approaches to the form than you are likely to find elsewhere.
Many sections in the book could become your go-to references when you want to return to basics: Beary’s three requirements of good haibun; a concise history of haibun in English; the 4-spark reading framework—a method of reading that highlights the dynamics within a haibun; a table that summarizes how four different haiku shift the interplay between the haiku and the prose; Youmans’ seven ways that poets use haiku in a haibun; and checklists for good haibun. Not to mention the generous appendix of haibun prompts, exercises, websites, publishers, and collections.
This book will make you a better reader and writer of haibun—and help you enjoy the journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
A really excellent guide to the composition of haibun, a skill which, in my opinion, can be equally as difficult, if not even harder, than composing good haiku. The book contains some really impressive examples, along with good advice and helpful tips, all clearly laid out, along with some wonderful haiku. The samples of haibun given here are actually so impressive that one might even feel rather discouraged, wondering whether it is possible to ever equal them. Still, as they say, practice makes perfect. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Information Packed Concise Easily read
As a long time fan of Haibun, I was very interested in reading this new book. Haibun A Writer's Guide is exactly what it claims to be. This is a well thought out, chapter by chapter, how-to book written by three of the most knowledgeable writers and editors in the form. Roberta Beary, Lew Watts, and Rich Youmans each have their own approach to haibun, but given the credentials and experience of each of them, their alternate views only add to their teachings.
Haibun A Writer's Buide gave me insight into several new ways written work can be structured. The advice stating how a poem can be improved upon in rewrites is solid. There's an example given for every bit of information shared to portray exactly what is being asked of us as writers of haibun. The exercises are clearly set to give each person a fair shot at creating and improving on their own work. The Sparks approach is a new one to me, but I found it incredibly easy to follow. If you are a visual learner, there's a great diagram feature that makes the learning experience even better.
From cover to cover, this is a book not to be passed by. I highly recommend it, not just for those new to haibun, but for the seasoned poets as well. Five stars, but it really ought to be many, many more. Thanks so much! Vera Constantineau, former poet laureate Greater Sudbury, ON

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
As a haibun writer, a haibun editor, a leader of haibun workshops and occasional judge of a small haibun contest, I would definitely recommend this book to fellow writers in this genre, both experienced and new to the form as a source to learn the basics and also to discover fresh approaches. It would also make a wonderful prize for a winning contestant to enable them to move forward to greater heights.
