Car video recorders are electronic devices which are able to record, store and play video and audio information. They are constantly recording the situation around the car.

What are the types of car video recorders

By the installation method:

• Standalone. They are made as a single unit with a microchip and one or a few video cameras. They are notable for an affordable price and simplicity of installation, but, can obscure the view, as they are often installed onto the windshield.
• Integrated. They are built-in, most often into the rear view mirror and connected to the car battery. Their main advantages are absence of a visible cabling, fastening elements, and no need to charge the battery; the disadvantages – high energy consumption and price.

By quantity of cameras:

• Single-channel. They are inexpensive, but have rather narrow view angle – from 90° to 170°.
• Multi-channel. Their structure includes from 2 to 8 cameras. They provide all-around view, but price of such devices is significantly higher.

Operation principle

The device consists of a video camera that forms the signal, and a recording device that processes, compresses and stores the information received. Data are recorded on a memory card; and when it is full, new videos are written over old ones. The device is turned on either manually or automatically when starting off. Apart from the picture it also stores the date and time of the record, and, often, also the coordinates of the place where recording is performed. Some device types react to impacts: the files recorded after collision are stored in a separate folder.

Tips on car video recorders use

1. Before starting off, don’t forget to turn on the device, adjust the date and time, activate GPS-module (if it is available). This will allow the device to link the video record to the exact date and coordinates.
2. Make sure that the camera doesn’t vibrate during driving. Otherwise the image can be blurry. With this in view, it is advisable to opt for video recorders on a small bracket.
3. Tilt the camera in such a way that a sufficiently large part of the bonnet could be captured by its lens, and the image exposure could adjust itself basing on the lower part of the frame, otherwise the image will be too bright.
4. During cold season, if the car is stored in a non-heated room, it is better to take the unit home with you. Low temperatures are fraught with total battery discharge, which can lead to deletion of all the previously recorded data.
5. Do not use lighting during night time recording. It worsens video quality because of glares.
6. Use the settings of brightness, resolution and contrast, recommended by the manufacturer. Adjusting these parameters for the already recorded image can worsen the quality of the video or made its detalization impossible.
