Like other fuses, the window regulator fuse is located in the fuse box. You can find it inside the car under the dashboard, under a rear seat, behind the glove box, or in the engine compartment. Check your car owner’s manual to find out the exact location of the fuse, a diagram and a fuse number. Usually, the underside of the fuse box cover has all information about the assignment of the fuses. Depending on a fuse rating, they can have different colours.

This procedure depends on a car make, model and version, as well as on the part that should be removed. If you need to remove the whole assembly, its electric motor, or the lifting mechanism, you will have to disassemble the door. This usually requires removal of the trim panels, armrest, and audio speaker.

To take out the window regulator control unit, release the switch button panel clips and pry the panel with an appropriate tool, a plastic trim remover for instance. It can be also used to remove a manual window regulator handle. Just place this tool in the gap between the part and the door panel.

Always disconnect the negative terminal from the car battery before you start any work with the electrical system. It is recommended to use special clip removal tools for disassembling a door in order not to damage the trim panel. You can find exact instructions in your car owner’s manual.

Malfunctions of this unit can be mechanical or electrical. The latter include burnout of a fuse, relay, or electric motor, damaged wiring, or oxidation of contacts. They are often caused by a short circuit, ingress of moisture and dirt into electrical connectors, as well as attempts to open a frozen window.

The mechanical malfunctions include the lifting mechanism operation issues and worn or dirty guide rails. Usually this comes with jamming of the window, its incomplete closure, or jerky movement. The reasons are glass misalignment, foreign objects between the moving elements of the mechanism, ingress of moisture, or damaged door seals. Take into account that window jerks can indicate not only a malfunction but also incorrect system settings.
