Dodge NeonDodge Neon cars were produced by the American Chrysler Corporation from 1994 to 2005. During this time two generations of the model and a restyling were presented. The cars’ assembly was established in the USA, Mexico and Venezuela.
Dodge Neon I generationDodge Neon Concept was presented at the North American International Auto Show in 1991. The concept car did not have a B-pillar and the hinged doors were being opened backwards by an electric drive. The bonnet’s inclination angle was almost equal to the windshield which provided an excellent aerodynamic rating.
The release of the production model began in January 1994. The first generation of the car was manufactured until 1999. The design was largely borrowed from the concept car: it had the same round headlights, inclined roof and lifted back part. The car’s hood, on contrary to the concept, had an inclination angle that was more usual for passenger cars. A distinctive feature of the vehicles were their frameless doors. Cars in sedan and coupe bodies were available.
The car’s interior was simple, spacious and ergonomic. Many glass-holders, containers and pockets were provided for comfortable space organization.
Dodge Neon vehicles had a reputation of reliable, simple in service and inexpensive cars. Japanese journalists named this model a "killer-car": its technical characteristics and dynamics of the Dodge Neon could compete with Japanese cars in its class, while the cost was much cheaper.
Dodge Neon II generationThe second generation of the car debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999. The advertising campaign reported more than 1000 changes in the new Dodge Neon. The enlarged car became more respectable-looking. The frameless doors were replaced with frame structures. The basic package included side curtain airbags. Also the cars of the second generation were equipped with air conditioning, audio system with six speakers, front power windows and ABS. Expensive packages had leather elements and chrome plated details in their interior trim. Coupe was excluded from the bodies line-up.
Dodge Neon II generation restylingIn 2003 the second generation of the Dodge Neon cars underwent a restyling. Bumpers, headlights and radiator grille were slightly changed. Front turn indicators were integrated into the headlights.
Dodge Neon on different marketsDodge Neon cars are known under other names. In Europe, Australia and Japan, the car was sold as the Chrysler Neon. In the United States, Canada, Mexico and Egypt the car is also known under the name of Plymouth Neon.
