Opel Kadett
Opel Kadett was produced from 1936 to 1940, and also from 1962 to 1991. This car was positioned by the developer as the budgetary model of economy class. The car was assembled at the plant in the city of Russelsheim, Germany.
Model 1936–1979
The first model of Opel Kadett was created in 1936. It was a big car of an executive class. It was released in bodies of a coupe and a cabriolet. Production of Opel Kadett K36-38 was stopped in 1940.
Completely updated car left in sale again in 1962 and was produced at plant the in Bochum, Germany. Initially designers provided only one body — a two-door sedan, but in several years the Opel Kadett A station wagon appeared.
In 1965 production of Opel Kadett B began. Designers considerably improved principal specifications of the model: engines, transmission and running gear were modified completely.
The third generation of the Opel Kadett C model which went to stock production in 1973 differed from the second generation slightly. Developers reduced car dimensions, the line of available bodies was also extended.
Model D
In 1979 the Opel concern presented the fourth generation of the model that gained great popularity and wide sales.
Especially for Opel Kadett D, designers adapted the Family II engine, with aluminum cylinder heads. Similar engines were used in the Opel Corsa/Nova and Opel Cavalier/Ascona models.
Developers provided a large number of bodies: 2-and 4-door fastback, 3-and 5-door hatchback, van, 3-and 5-door station wagon.
Model E
The producer presented the fifth generation of Opel Kadett in 1984. In 1985 the model received the status "The European car of year".
Ford Escort and Volkswagen Golf were the main competitors of this model. The concern considerably expanded production and began release of these cars in Belgium, Portugal and Great Britain.
Model E restyling
In 1989, developers carried out restyling of Opel Kadett cars of the fifth generation to return the former popularity to the model. The radiator grille shape and back optics were changed.
In 1991 the company terminated the release of Opel Kadett model. Nevertheless, the car in a cabriolet body was produced till 1993.
Opel Kadett in the markets of the different countries
The car was sold widely in South Africa. The following bodies became the most popular: a 4-door sedan, a 5-door hatchback and the 5-door station wagon which received the name Opel Kadett Voyage. The fifth generation of the model had Opel Monza marking.
In Great Britain the model was released under the Vauxhall Belmont name. The elaborated modification of the model with the reinforced engine was released under the name of Vauxhall Astra. In Brazil the car had the Chevrolet Kadett name, but the 3-door station wagon of this model got the name of Chevrolet Ipanema.
In South Korea the fifth generation of the car was named Daewoo LeMans. The model also carried the names of Daewoo Cielo, Racer and Nexia. In the USA and New Zealand consumers knew this model of the car as Pontiac LeMans, and in Canada — as Passport Optima.
