Opel Kapitän
Opel Kapitän is a luxury car produced from 1939 to 1970. In total, eight generations of the model were released. Assembling of Opel Kapitän - the corporation’s flagship model in Europe - was carried out in Germany.
Opel Kapitän 1939–1957 year
The first car under the Opel Kapitän name was presented in 1938 at domestic German market. One year later the world premiere of the car took place: Opel Kapitän became an exhibit of the Geneva auto exhibition. The car won popularity not only in Germany, but also outside it: more than 25 000 copies were sold by 1940 year. The car had best sales in Sweden and Denmark. Also the model gained popularity in Argentina, China, New Zealand, the Republic of South Africa and Costa Rica.
From 1939 to 1957 four generations of the model were released. All of them had independent front wheel suspension, all the cars were rear-wheel drive and frameless — these features were progressive for those times.
The design of cars of the first generations was developed in the American style: the Opel brand belonged to the American General Motors in those days.
The exterior of the car stood out with its combination of soft lines and smoothed angles.
Initially hexagon headlights, difficult in construction, were installed on the cars. Over time they were replaced by lights of a round shape.
A sedan and a cabriolet were available bodies in the beginning, then it was decided to produce a sedan only. Bodies of the cars of the fourth generation, debuted in 1954, were increased in sizes and became much wider, than the predecessor had.
As a result of restyling of 1956, cars of the fourth generation had the curved radiator grille, new design of car sides and headlights.
Opel Kapitän P1
Release of the fifth generation of Opel Kapitän was carried out in 1958-1959. The design of a new car corresponded to tendencies of the American fashion, so it caused sharp criticism of car owners: they did not like excessively elaborate exterior, a narrow rear doorway and a roof which became six centimeters lower, than at the predecessor. Nevertheless, in the advertising campaign the emphasis was placed on big panoramic windscreens typical for the American cars and new for German ones.
Opel Kapitän P2
Release of the sixth generation of Opel Kapitän was carried out in 1959-1963. The car roof became flat, the design of back and front part was developed in the European style with emphasis to horizontal lines and accurate shaped. For more comfortable boarding of rear passengers, the roof edges design was changed a little.
Opel Kapitän A
The seventh generation of the model debuted in 1964 and became part of absolutely new KAD series into which Opel Kapitän, Opel Admiral and Opel Diplomat cars have entered. The Opel Kapitän model was the most budget car in this family. The car of new generation became much larger than the predecessor. The seventh generation of the model was produced till 1968.
Opel Kapitän A restyling
In 1967 cars of the seventh generation were subjected to restyling. In the updated cars, producers installed a safe steering system of ZF with the column capable to be deformed at accident. Also heating of a rear screen was offered.
Opel Kapitän B
The eighth generation of Opel Kapitän B was released in 1969. The body of the updated model became five centimeters shorter. Over time the demand for this car decreased. Release of the last generation proved it once again, and in 1970 release of Opel Kapitän B was terminated.
