The model was the first car of the company with the front wheel drive. In total from 1961 to 1992 more than 8 000 000 Renault 4 have been produced that has made a car the most popular for all the history of the French automotive industry.

The debut of Renault 4 took place at the Parisian motor show in autumn, 1961. The successful design and reasonable price of the car have provided to model phenomenal success. With time release of the car has been adjusted in 28 countries of the world. Renault 4 cars were made in a five-door hatchback and a van bodies.

Till 1970 by reservation there was a possibility to buy the car in a cabriolet body which was made of existing Renault 4 by dismantle and replacement of some elements of a body. In total company released less than 600 cabriolets, presently they are in great demand at collectors.

Design became the distinctive feature of the car: the removable body was set on a solid platform. The producer for the first time used the wide rear door providing convenient access to a luggage space and compartment. The opportunity to order the hatch closed by a tarpaulin roof was an additional option.

The interior of Renault 4 differed in extreme simplicity. The model had no central console, and the dashboard contained only a speedometer. The compartment was extraordinary spacious for such compact car. Front wheel arches left a lot of space for legs of the driver and passenger.

Because of fully independent torsion suspension the car differed in smooth driving. The van had the strengthened rear suspension. The producer has adapted this model for driving on bad country roads ideally that further has secured the car success in offroad racing.

In 1965 two Renault 4 cars travelled through all South and North America. Cars have passed more than 10 000 km without a breakdown. In 1979 the car has brought to the team the second place on rally Paris — Dakar.

In 1963 the car has received a new design of the rear door. In the end of the year the company presented Renault 4 Parisienne which production continued nearly five years. The car differed in the improved quality of finishing of a body and was created especially for women.

In 1966 the producer has replaced the dashboard and the wheel of the car. Export modifications had the improved inner trim. In 1967 the car has received the new radiator grille.

From 1968 to 1970 the company released model Plein Air in a cabriolet body instead of the laid-off Renault 4 Parisienne car.

In 1974 the producer has equipped rear seats of a car with safety belts. The car has received the new plastic radiator grille, the improved window wipers, and also a fuel tank of the increased capacity.

In 1980 the producer has replaced the chrome plated bumpers by painted ones. Brake and exhaust systems have been improved. In 1983 the car has received front disk brakes, and in 1989 — fog lamps.
