Release of Renault 6 was carried out in 1968-1980. In total one generation of the model and one restyling was released. Renault 6 models were produced in France, Spain, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and outside Europe — in Chile, Colombia and Argentina also. In Colombia more than two thousand copies were released special for taxi services.

The first generation of Renault 6 was produced from 1968 to 1974. The debut of the car took place at the Parisian motor show in 1968. The model was designed on the basis of Renault 4, but it differed from the predecessor in the increased dimensions and improved principal specifications. The design and proportions of a body were borrowed from more expensive model - Renault 16. The collapsible front seats, an external mirror and a washer of a windshield entered the basic equipment of Renault 6. The car was released in a body of a five-door hatchback.

At creation of a new model designers were guided by the requirements of young families with children. Renault 6 carried out functions of the family car perfectly: it was unpretentious in service, had capacious compartment and a big luggage carrier.

The design of the model was sustained in the spirit of the time: angular forms, round headlights, the chrome plated bumpers, a decorative strip on a trunk lid, a firm radiator grille with the Renault logo. The larger fifth door facilitated access to the rear compartment.

In 1974 restyling of Renault 6 was carried out. The car received square headlights, a plastic radiator grille and the updated rear lamps. Front direction indicators were integrated into a bumper. Front seat belts were established at all models. Front seats with head restraints and heating of back window were included in the basic complete set of the cars.

In 1980 Renault 6 model was taken out of production in France. In Spain production of these cars proceeded till 1986.
