Volvo 340–360The release of Volvo 340–360 cars carried out from 1976 to 1991. A single generation of the model was presented during this period. The production of the vehicles took place in Born, The Netherlands, and Gothenburg, Sweden.
Volvo 340-360 I generationThe history of Volvo 340-360 began in 1970 with the creation of P900 project. This project was developed by the Dutch DAF firm, which engaged the production of cars and trucks. In 1973 the Swedish company bought most of the shares of the Dutch manufacturer and the project was taken over by the Volvo. Volvo 343 three-door hatchback was created on the P900 basis and debuted in 1976. The car slightly differed from the DAF prototype.
Famous Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti was involved in the development of the Volvo 343’s design. He was the one, who created DAF P900 project. Angled body of Volvo 343, decorated with chrome moldings and rectangular headlights looked stylish and modern at the moment of release. Despite the compact size, the car had quite a spacious passenger compartment. Back-row seats could be folded, increasing the capacity of the luggage compartment.
First, the car was released as a three-door hatchback. In 1980 a five-door Volvo 345 was released. Sedan was named Volvo 344.
Volvo 340-360 cars had high safety rates, a good road performance, a reliability, a simplicity in maintenance and a low price, so they arouse car lovers’ interest immediately after the release. But due to the problems with a corrosion, a poor assembly quality, missteps during the construction the model began to lose the popularity. Management of the Swedish company reacted quickly and held several modernizations, in order to eliminate current problems.
Volvo 340-360 I generation restylingsDesign and technical characteristics of the Volvo 340-360 were improving regularly. In 1978 the cars began to be equipped with a new transmission. Sound isolation was improved and new seats appeared in the cabin. Since 1979 front seats’ heaters were a basic option for expensive packages.
In 1980 the car’s design was renewed again. A hood, radiator grille and headlights underwent the changes. Wider plastic bumpers started to be installed on the cars. In 1981 the manufacturers renewed a dashboard, seats and door panels. Since 1983 the number which indicated the quantity of doors was removed from the model name. In 1984 all vehicles with more powerful B19 engines received the name Volvo 360. In 1991 the production of Volvo 340–360 cars was finished.
