Ford Cougar is a two-door coupe released from 1999 to 2002. Initially the model was thought as the third generation of already popular Ford Probe car, but after the restyling the exterior of the car changed so much that the decision was made to produce it as a self-contained model.

This car was produced at the European plant Ford in Cologne, Germany, and also at Flat Rock plant in Michigan. Such producers as Ford, Mazda and Fiat worked on creation of this car.

Ford Cougar became the second attempt of Ford concern to start the European production of the sport coupe. The new model had to be based on already popular and successful Ford Capri. But after 10-year lack of new cars of this class it was required to consider features of the market. It was decided to construct the new car on the Ford CD132 platform.

For the first time Ford Cougar was presented in 1998 and received rather contradictory comments. The main disputes concerned design of an exterior of the model which was directly opposed to the New Edge style. This style was popular and was used in all new Ford models at that time.

A high safety level was marked out as the advantage of Ford Cougar cars. Designers installed the anti-locking braking system (ABS) and equipped the car with a set of the frontal and side air bags. The special attention was paid to anti-theft system: blocking of the engine, system of a remote control, double key system and alarm system.

Mercury Cougar of the eighth generation which was produced from 2001 to 2002 is considered the twin of the Ford Cougar model. This car enjoyed popularity in the USA.
