Electronic engine control units or controllers are devices that control the operation of the motor, receiving and processing information from various sensors. The main functions of the unit are the following:

• controlling fuel supply to an injector-type engine;
• monitoring operation of the ignition system;
• maintaining correct temperature in the cooling system;
• monitoring of exhaust gas recirculation.

The construction of the unit includes a housing. It contains a PCB, a storage device and a microprocessor. The housing also has connectors for the vehicle electrical network connection. The controllers are located under the hood of the vehicle or on the side of the front instrument panel, near the passenger seat, behind the glovebox.

The software of the unit has two modules — the functional one and the control one. The first one receives and processes the information from the sensors, and sends respective signals to the actuators. The second one checks incoming information from the sensor according to the specified parameters, and can block the engine operation if a fault is detected.

The estimated service life of controllers is stated in the technical documentation by the manufacturer of a particular vehicle. Perform timely diagnostics of the unit in accordance with the manufacturer recommendations.
