This was a delightful little IF game, and the second of Chandler Groover's works that I've played! Running around the manor and trying to attend to a party of rich assholes while the master of the house runs amok with some curious bat-like affliction was very fun, and I enjoyed the puzzles this game presented. It only took me a couple hours of downtime to play, and like many other text-adventures, it can be played entirely for free in-browser. I highly recommend it if you've got some time to spare and are willing to walk a mile in the shoes of billionaire Bryce Wyatt's poor, overworked valet...

toxic yaoi got me giggling and kicking my feet <3
i would have loved more, but it was a fun short read

Homicipher is a compelling puzzle/horror game that simulates the experience of forced language immersion learning by dropping the main character in a mysterious world filled with creepy freaks whose strange language you must decipher while trying not to get killed.

Oh, and also you can romance those freaks! <3

If you asked me to name a target audience for this game, I would have to say it's made for girls who were really into Creepypasta in middle school — especially the ones who wanted to date Slenderman or Jeff the Killer or something. And the other target audience would be anyone who enjoys horror games, language puzzles, and endearingly creepy characters who mayyybe might kill you.

I was drawn to this game by the language puzzle that it presents, and it certainly did not disappoint! Filling out the game's dictionary is a delightful and addicting challenge, especially since the slightest mistakes can lead to very violent deaths.

Under threat of instant doom, you can learn how to say cute and fun phrases in the otherworld language, like "want your heart" and "you give heart?" Or the very important distinction between "cut hair" and "cut head!"

As you progress through the game, various characters will teach you some words, and others will need to be deciphered through context clues, which means you'll probably have a lot of trial & error guesses before you find the word that fits. And oh, is it a joy to finally figure out the right words!

At the time I am writing this review, I have finally completed the dictionary and am fairly confident that most of my definitions are correct. The game doesn't have any sort of confirmation system to tell you when you've defined a word correctly, so you have to rely on your own understanding of the dialogue to really know when your answers are correct. Even after completing the dictionary, I've still been nitpicking words to find the most suitable match.

But enough about the puzzle aspect, I know what you're really here for: the weirdass creepy men <3

If you go into Homicipher expecting a typical romance/dating sim game with distinct routes and happy endings for each love interest, you'll probably be disappointed. The "romance with horror men" tagline on the game's Steam page refers to a more subtle aspect of the plot. There's no overt "dating" or relationship progression, but you can grow close to the characters you encounter and romantic feelings/relationships are certainly implied in some of the endings. I really liked this element, and I think the more subtle romantic progression really suits the game, and the emotional bonds feel like the progress naturally while you, as the player, also grow to love the characters. I think that including more direct romance & dating routes would be a little too tonally dissonant when placed inside the horror game setting.

The characters, despite their horror-infused designs, are undeniably cute once you get to know them, especially the beloved fan-favorite, Mr. Crawling <3

Personally, I'm also partial to Mr. Chopped (he doesn't need a body to be adorable!!) and Mr. Scarletella (I love a clingy freak <3). And of course, who could forget the loveable Mr. Gap?! (he only wants your heart, is that too much to ask??)

The game has 34 endings, so there's still plenty of secrets to discover even after completing the dictionary! (My personal favorites have to be Ending 04 & the "Scarlet Rain" ending <3) The overarching lore you get to discover as you pursue the major endings is compelling, and well-worth the time put into exploring it.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, and I highly recommend it to puzzle-enjoyers and horror/romance fans alike! I hope you find it's puzzles and characters as fun and weirdly charming as I did. :)
